I'm waiting on some OCZ Freeze. My temps right now, running open air like that, are around 43-44 load [22 ambient] (taking into account the AS5 hasn't cured at all). I'm wanting to see if the OCZ really does about the same job without taking 200 hours of curing time.
Open air, as in no case right? Looks good, BenchmarkReview has a good comparison of 80 different TIMs and methods for the application of the TIMs to the major types of heatsink bases.

You could also make a shroud out of plastic or cardboard and not have to waste a fan.

How were your temps before and after this? I'm interested as I have the same problem with my Xigmatek Nepartak not being oriented the ideal way (the fan is blowing air towards the PSU).

Well I haven't been able to test yet. Idle temps were about the same. Load temps were up ~2-3C but I'm sure that's from the new AS vs cured AS. as far as the bolting itself probably didn't help temps much, but it will help my temps tremendously when I get it into the case (waiting on OCZ freeze) and can have that air funneling straight to it.

Open air setup (no case):
Before:
Idle 24-26
Load 40-41

After:
Idle 24-26
load 42-44

In Case:
Before:
Idle 28-29
Load 47-50

After:
Who knows yet... hopefully somewhere in the -273 range...

I laughed when I saw the pliers holding the drill bit. Almost what I had to do to get the screws into the backplate mount as well. I bought hex screws though with rigged heads so I could thumb them down. Then I used an allen wrench that was just short of hitting the bottom heatsink plate to tighten them down.

Coming from a fellow custom mount/Xiggy user I'd recommend a push/pull setup with the tape mod. It really helps for temps.

could you explain how you did the push pull? The zip ties I have won't fit through the fins, and I'm not sure what the tape mod is.

The only thing I can find on Tape Mod is about Intel Q6600. Is that what you're talking about?
