Default My Cooling Problems

I have an E8400 that I took off my motherboard yesterday. I forgot to reapply thermal paste last night and was running at 101C. Then, today, I took it back off, did thermal paste on clean surfaces, bought a Vendetta 2, and mounted it. The problem is that I did my best to mount the pushpins, but they seem to just suck at everything.

I'll cut to the chase.

1. My motherboard is mounted vertically, and the heatsink and fan are still secure. I'm not sure whether this will tell you guys anything about the mounting of it, but it hasn't fallen yet.

2. The pushpins were a real pain to get in. I had to take my motherboard out, and I know that they're not perfectly in, but after an hour, you start to get frustrated and you do the best you can. As I said above, they seem to be holding up relatively well.

Specs:

- I have a large, full tower. I have a side fan pulling air in, the aftermarket cooler, a 120MM on the front pulling in and a 120MM on the back pulling out. The case HAD a lot of space but my GFX card takes up a load of room.

Tech Specs:

- Non-Overclocked E8400. I was going to OC it, but when I saw my temps, I was going crazy.

- Brand new GTX285.

- OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W PSU with 50A on the 12V.

- 4GB of XMS2 PC6400 RAM.

- Intel Media Board with the second latest BIOS. For Intel boards, I don't see it necessary to reflash my BIOS if the newest contains no fixes for my board.

- Vendetta II heatsink and 120MM fan. I used the packaged thermal paste that came with the V2. They were out of AS.

- If I can't seem to solve the problem, can you point me towards a cheap (<$30) that doesn't use that proprietary pushpin system? It's never worked for me, and I hate it.

Temperature Readings:

On XS Bench, I scored a 971 in 15 seconds.

Note: I have yet to load up the processor a ton, i.e., I haven't gamed yet.

I am fairly certain they make a bolt thru kit for the vendetta, that would solve a lot of your problems.

hmm it shouldnt be that high.

On the stock cooler my e8500 ran at 48c load.

What voltage are you putting through it? Try getting coretemp and that will tell you the chips VID. Go into the bios and set the cpu voltage to that.

Turn off speedstep etc as that can overvolt the proc causing high temps etc.

Regards

Those temps should be at load. Make sure when you push the pins they make a click noise. It will be on there without moving.

You guys are great. Thanks for replying so fast.

Also, it's not overclocked at all. The voltages are stock. Problem is, with the pushpins, the Vendetta is so large that I can't reach them all the way. I'd rather grab a bolt-through kit than go through that.

So your going with the bolt through? Good idea. Lets us know how it go's. And we can help you get your chip running fast.

Yeah, but I want to play Far Cry 2! Do you think I would have a problem playing it? With my CPU temperatures up there and all? I do have a GTX285 which should handle the brunt of the work.

Did you check what your load temps are?

Nope, haven't done that yet. I've been scared to even start FC2 because I don't want to have what my motherboard dubs "A Thermal Event".
