An option would be to clean it off the meg just now then it should spread fine with it just on the CPU.

Just put the thermal paste about the size of a grain of rice in the middle of the cpu that's it. Use 91% isopropyl alcohol with q-tip and clean the cpu and heatsink before you apply the new paste

I tried the grain of rice method with a Q6600. I got Prime95 to crash the CPU at stock settings. There is a reason why Arctic Silver say to use a line of compound for quad cores with their particular material.

looks prefect

OP---way to much paste.Just a dab on the center of the cpu the size if a grian of rice. But frist you can smear some on(use a plastic bag)the cpu and H/S just to fill in the gaps then wipe the excess off.Now put the dab on the IHS and put the H/S on sitting it down square on top.Dont rock it or you will get air bubbles

Actually most people who use this method make the line too fat resulting in too much thermal compound and temps that are too high. The only way to do it this way is to use the end of a mechanical pencil attached to the thermal compound tube to make a very thin line. Make sure to go in the right direction.

This is the method most people here use. Someone did a poll and this was by far the most used method. It is also the easiest. I use it, you should try it.
