Default Can this be right?

OK, let me first say hello. I am a computer novice compared to all of you, but have a great friend who is also a member here and helps me with every problem, who go me to join since I'm considering overclocking.

First thing's first, I just received my Dark Knight cpu cooler yesterday, having bought it because my stock cooler was hitting 40 degrees C on idle before a cleaning, and 35 C after. It was constantly freezing when I was running multiple tasks, etc...

Now, having run OCCT, my average "idle" temperature is about 22 C? Is it remotely possible for such a drop off? I have a basic Antec 300 with no mods, no extra fans...

Checked BIOS, OCCT, speedfan, and core temp.

Thanks!

Well it depends on what CPU you have, the details you've given us are a bit sparse.

OMG, how could I forget, sorry *idiot news here*.

Using a Phenom II 720 BE @ stock speed.

It's an 1004, so not a 4th core unlockable, even though I'm using F2 BIOS.

The 720 runs extremely cool so if you have cooler ambient temperatures then yes those temps are possible.

First, which CPU do you have? And regarding idle temps: there's a very long description involved here, but I'll try to cut right to the chase: idle temps are much more inaccurate than load temps because the sensors were designed for one thing, and only one thing: to tell the CPU to shut off if the temperature sensors reach the Tj. Max of the CPU, which is set by Intel/AMD. So, the sensors are required to be 100% accurate at such an extremely high temperature (for example, 90-100°C).

But, for your own benefit, fill in your System Specifications by doing the following:
  1. Click on "User CP" on the black bar at the top.
  2. Click "Edit System" on the left side.
  3. When finished, press Enter (or just click "Save Changes" at the bottom).
Edit: I am slow.
