I mean, should I be questioning the accuracy of my temp measurements? I have been using CoreTemp, and HWMonitor. I keep reading about people with amazing coolers who are getting the same or higher, so how am I achieving this, or, are these temps actually high?

Those temps look about normal. From reading these boards I'm under the impression that you should always keep the core temp below 55C.

Are AMD's core temps higher than the CPU temp? Intel would have lower CPU temp than core temps?

You don't want coretemp's temps to go past 62.5C.
You can note the difference between the two temperatures and reference it from there. my friend's temps are also unreadable when unlocked so we have to go by CPU temp and then adjust to get the correct reading.

Well I seem to have a 14c difference between cpu and core, idle and load. My core is always lower than cpu. So when cpu is at 70c, the apparent max temp for it, my core would presumably be at 56c. So I'm assuming I mustn't go above 56c.

someone said the CPU temp is the temp under the processor in the socket of the mobo, which is for old CPUs w/o temp sensors built in the processor
you can disregard that now, and use the core's temperature as a basis
it hasn't removed just because some may want to know what that is
core temp is lower because your heatsink is cooling the top of your CPU, which is closest to the cores
the CPU temp is beneath the chip itself, which doesn't get cooled; it just disperses to mobo

the core temp is the temp inside your CPU, so that's the most important

Thanks for the explanation. So that brings me back to the maximum temp of 70c specified by AMD, is it the core temp? And with no core temp visible if I unlock, I still go by the bios temp to make a judgement?

Wait, what about this?

Tcase is the cpu reading in bios as far as I can tell. Doesn't this suggest that even if cores are unavailable to see with unlocked cores, that all you have to do is monitor bios readings up to 70c? Or up to 60c for other chips, like x3 or x4 ?

The safe temp is not 56C, it's 62.5.
And your CPU temp should be less than your Core temp
