i use 100% from lowes or home depot. don't swallow it because you WILL go blind, die, or go blind and die. if it has water in it then you have to wait a long time for the water to eveporate.

the greater the quantity of solvent the greater the amount of solute that can be absorbed. and I just bought a a liter of 97% isopropal for $3 so it not like it is all that expensive to get the more powerful concentrates.

I don't know if any of you tried this, but I use a BUTANE lighter fluid to remove and dissolve TIM before wiping it clean with alcohol. This is ESPECIALLY useful for those gunky stock TIM, which is both crusty and nasty.
__________________It dissolves the old TIM whatever it may be, and it makes TIM removal SO MUCH FASTER.

If you feel unconfortable with the current concentration of isopropanol that's being used, you can always concentrate it with a 5 molar salt solution (NaCl/table salt dissolved in water is fine). Put your alcohol and salt solution in a tube, cover it, and shake vigorously. You will get a buildup of salt at the bottom of the tube and two layers that form (since both isopropanol and water look the same, you're going to have to look really close to find the interface). Water is the bottom layer, and the concentrated isopropanol will be sitting on the top layer. It's probably not worth the extra effort if a high % alcohol costs a little more, but sometimes I'm lazy and don't want to make the trip to the store, and I have a bunch of salt lying around anyways....so might as well.
