Default 2800+ idling very hot

My AMD 2800+ is idling at 54C. I haven't overclocked it at all and I'm worried i'll damage the processor. Should I be worried and are there any cheap options to replace the stock cooling? Thanks for the help.

Alright I filled out my system specs. I took off the side of my case and let the hot air empty out and after 30 minutes with the computer off I put the side back on and watched speedfan. The cpu temp started in the 30's and is now up to 50 degrees celcius without any activity. Today I figured out how to set my FSB on the motherboard to match my cpu. Before the idle temp had been much lower but with the correct FSB and no overclocking, the idle temp is up to 50+. Now I took the side off the case and the cpu temp is dropping below 50C, it's down to 46C

I only spent 400 dollars on the computer so buying a 50 dollar heatsink and fan for the cpu seems a bit rediculous. Since the temperature is dropping so much just from taking the side of the case off should I invest in a couple case fans? That would certainly be much cheaper than buying a new heatsink and fan for the cpu. If case fans would work, what fans will fit my case. It has 2 spots for fans near the CPU

Alright I bought 10 masscool 80mm fans from newegg for 9.60 shipped. Hopefully this will lower the env. temp and help keep the CPU at reasonable temps.

Yeah, case fans are an absolute must. Dunno why they aren't just included on every case.

my 2600+ did the exact same thing, but it wasn't the case coolings fault. i got this HSF from newegg for 13.99 along with some as5 and it dropped me from 52c idle to 44c and from 64c load to 52. (that was before my as5 cured all the way) then i bought this fan to go on it.... basically it made it like a volcano 12, for about the same price. (got money after i already had the HSF, so i just upgraded..) altogether i now idle at 35.5c and load at 40c, so down about 17c idle and 24c load for about $30. thats the best cheap HSF i could find, notice that its all copper, very nice. so if all those case fans dont help, you might try out this.

measure the diagonal from screw hole to screw hole and that'll help you with measuring ideas. generally, fans come in 80mm, 92mm, and 120mm. so the diagonals might be around 90mm, 100mm, and 130mm respectively.

btw, nice find with the 10 fans for under 10 bucks!

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll definitely try that heatsink combo if the case fans don't work but since having the side off helps I feel like the environmental temp in the case is at least part of the problem. That case fan deal is pretty sweet. It's funny because 1 fan costs 7 dollars shipped, 2 costs 8 something, 10 costs 9.60 shipped.

thats what were all here for.... well that and to ask all the smarter people about our own questions.. .those fans a deffinately a good buy, where are you gonna put all of them? and when you get them all in it would be interesting to see how much of a difference it made. and if you still get to hot during your forthcoming OCing, try out that HS.. its a goodun. good luck
