So after a lucky (seemingly lol, booted up first time no problems) unlocking of my fourth core on this 720be I realized that you cannot get an accurate reading on the core temp! Anyhow I'm ordering 3 more 120mm fans for my 300 and I was contemplating on what to do about CPU cooling ! I've been thinking about that xigma setup but I remembered reading something about how specific heatsink and fan combos are actually better on dual than quad core.
Basically do I need to buy one of the 60 dollar beasts if I wanna get this quad to 3.6ish?

Probably, especially if it is the stock one without the heatpipes.
And Everest can read the temp

I'm at 3.6 with my Mugen 2. Don't know how the two CPU's compare however.

I thought that the everest reading was from a sensor that gathered ambient temps?
Anyways, the mugen is good enough then, yea?

And yes Mugen 2 is the best price/performance out there right now. At load I'm about 42 degrees (3 core sig rig plus different fan and ocz freeze)

either of the three: sunbeam core contact freezer, xigmatek dark knight, scythe mugen 2.
the mugen 2 will be a little bit better in terms of performance. but it is huge, a pain to install, and is likely to eat up your first two ram slots. get the dark knight if you don't want the hassle, but if you won't be able to mount it with the fan facing towards the back of the case. you'll have to buy a customized retention bracket for it. the sunbeam core contact performs on par with a dark knight and is be the most user friendly of the three, it comes with a fan controller and a quality thermal paste.

I'd have to agree with getting the DK for simple and smaller install area. As for your question in regards to it cooling a quad core...people are using the DK to cool their i7 920s if that answers your questions
![]() Oh and the DK cools my buddies 720 at 3.6 with 36c under load but only 3 core.
