Default Megahalems vs. Corsair H50

Tonight I finally settled a burning question I had: whether the H50 could take down a Megahalems.

For the Mega, I used a generic 120x25mm fan that Swiftech included in one of their H2O kits. I don't know much about the specs other than it spins at 1600RPM at 12v. The fan was placed on the opposite side as usual, taking air from the back of the case and blowing it inward so that its airflow characteristics would be similar to the H50.

For the H50 I used the fan that came with it.

Testbed was my sig rig running 3.78GHz @ 1.27v (HT on). This was mounted in a Corsair Obsidian with the rear panel fan reversed (as per Corsair instructions) and three 1200RPM Scythe SlipStreams mounted in exhaust configuration on the roof.

Using Prime95 small FFT to load the heat sink for 20 min, I got the following numbers:

H50:

68, 68, 68, 65

Megahalems:

66, 65, 66, 62

So it doesn't beat it at least with my configuration but comes respectably close.

so basically they would cost about the same (given the mega with a cheap fan), and the mega still wins? i like that I bet if you put on a panaflo, stressed the chip more and put the OC to 4.0Ghz the mega would dominate that H50.

I'm curious about a push/pull setup on both. Was the H50 blowing out air or sucking it into the case?

I was wondering how well that kit would hold up, not bad for $80. Right on par with the other reviews out there. Do you think adding a larger rad would help?

Great alternative to the Megahalem. A measly 2-3c diff? Not bad at all. Obviously performs up there with the best air cooler(s).

In both instances, the exhaust fan on the rear of the Obsidian was reversed so that it became in intake. This is how Corsair says to mount the H50. To keep the test as apples to apples as I could, I kept this configuration for the Mega. In addition I also moved the fan to the rear so that it blew toward the front of the case.

In order of airflow:

The Corsair was mounted case->120mm fan->radiator->top fans->room
The Mega was case->140mm (mounted to case)->120mm (on Mega)->top fans->room

Matches my own results. I've said many times the H50 is within ~1-3c of the megahalem.

for $60 at ZZF its a good buy.

thanks for posting the results.

edit: with push n pull with the H50 I think it would match the magahalem in cooling prowess.

I've been rather interested in one of these, I may just pick one up sometime soon and give it a shot.

I wonder how the H50 would do if it were lapped and had two H101s in push/pull on the rad... that would be interesting.

Good job indeed. This gives people more options. And looks like some impressive results. Keep up the good work.

So in theory if you replace the stock rad with something a bit better, you should see some great results.
