I'm looking at CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 2GB) but I'm wondering if it's overkill.
yes it would be an improvement. More then likly you will not hit 4Ghz with a 955, now an i7 you should be able to hit 4Ghz easy. As for Ram if you go i7 6GB's will be plenty even for people that do a lot of design.

Asus Crosshair III Motherboard
AMD Phenom II x4 955
OCZ 8GB 4x2GB AMD Black Edition Ram (I think)
Antec 1200 Full Tower Case

...as well as the rest of the guts.

I am really wanting to use the Corsair CMXAF2 Ram cooler too so this will limit the size of the cpu heatsink.

Obviously airflow is key. I do want to overclock the cpu a bit also.
I'd like to keep the price around $50 (give or take).
Noise doesn't matter. Although I would like to be able to connect the HSF to a fan controller.

I've already looked into the Xigmatek Dark Knight, Coolermaster R8, Thermalright Ultra 120 and a couple others. I did notice some heatsinks mount in different directions depending on the cpu socket like the Xigmatek Dark Knight for example, it's a nice cooler but it would have to be mounted horizontally which wouldn't give room for ram with any sort of heatsinks and definitely not the Ram cooler I want to use.

Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
look at my sig rig...it works for me...your setup is fine =)
