I'm looking for a CPU HSF for my new build which will consist of...
Asus Crosshair III Motherboard AMD Phenom II x4 955 OCZ 8GB 4x2GB AMD Black Edition Ram (I think) Antec 1200 Full Tower Case ...as well as the rest of the guts. I am really wanting to use the Corsair CMXAF2 Ram cooler too so this will limit the size of the cpu heatsink. Obviously airflow is key. I do want to overclock the cpu a bit also. I'd like to keep the price around $50 (give or take). Noise doesn't matter. Although I would like to be able to connect the HSF to a fan controller. I've already looked into the Xigmatek Dark Knight, Coolermaster R8, Thermalright Ultra 120 and a couple others. I did notice some heatsinks mount in different directions depending on the cpu socket like the Xigmatek Dark Knight for example, it's a nice cooler but it would have to be mounted horizontally which wouldn't give room for ram with any sort of heatsinks and definitely not the Ram cooler I want to use. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance! Last edited by tdawg2k7 : 10-14-09 at 07:52 AM |

Noctua NH-U12P SE2
This would be my first choice, it'll mount in an East/West orientation and cool your setup well.

another vote for the dark knight but you might need to get a separate am3 bracket

I just stumbled onto the Corsair H50 Water Cooler seems to do a little better than air coolers but not quite as good as traditional water cooling systems. Any opinions?

It doesn't do as well as the "big 5", but it's OK. By "big 5" I mean IFX-14, TRUE, Megahalems/Mega Shadow, Thor's Hammer, and Scythe MUGEN 2. It's just better to stick with one of those.

Tell us your budget too. For an ultimate setup, I would get a megahalems with some ic7 thermal paste and a pair of san aces for push pull.
