I've seen a lot of threads about the wind-tunnel effect in a lot of the higher end cases out there, that got me wondering in terms of creating an actual wind-tunnel to cool the cpu heatsink. This is just an idea, so please don't flame
__________________ . Any and all input greatly appreciated. I was thinking of using up 2 or even 3 of the 5.25 bays on a case and slapping in a couple of fans along the path between the entry and the cpu heatsink...that being said I would love to create an actual tunnel, running from the front to the back. This would in theory create as cool a temperature as possible reaching the CPU as it would get out in the open outside of a case on a work bench. From my basic understanding of physics I figured I would start off with a big wide opening up front and narrow down the exit points towards the heat-sink in order to create maximum exit velocity. Static pressure and CFM would be maximized hopefully. I'm sorry for the ADD nature of the writing, thats just the ADD hard at work. The same would be done at the exit, except the opposite widening out the exit to make it easier for the exhaust airflow to get out. Here's the basic sketch of what I had in mind.... yes I did it in mspaint as I'm in school right now on my craptop ;p ![]() I'm also wondering what would be the best material to use for the actual 'tunnel'. I don't want this to look like crap as the side panel is probably going to have a window...do I have my work cut out for me or what?

frozen cpu sells ducting to do exactly this.

The Silverstone TJ06S-W already has this feature built in.
The two materials that I'd suggest making out of are: polycarbonate/acrylic and aluminium. I'm sure there are things you can buy to do it anyway, though. If you decide to make it, please post pics. ![]() I do like pictures.

I have made one and did not see any diff in temps, but maybe yours will work.

Well if you took a large fan like 12" or 16" and took all the air flowing from it and pushed it through a 120mm hole then yes it would make things much better. Essentially it's just like ducting in your house. You get to control the flow and the location.

My suggestion to cut down on some cost would be to pull the air from the side so you will be pulling across a shorter distance. It is certainly a fine idea and many have done it.
Make sure you also have similar CFM/Static fans across the entire ducting or they will be fighting each other and shorten the life of your fans.

i used to have my 80mm side case fan pushing air in, but my vid and hd temps where hot, when i mad the 3 tornado's pull air from front of case (2 back, 1 side) my cpu went from 24~30 to 30~40 but my vid's/hd's dropped 10~15 c, the 2nd 8800gt @ the bottom of the case is still 60~110c but theres less then 1/2 inch there

I believe thermalright has ducts too, for their HR-01 towers. (But the duct fits on any 120mm fan)
