The point of his thread is so that threads like these won't keep coming up asking the same questions over and over... that's why it was stickied. Besides, not everyone is willing to go through the stickies, and just make the thread anyway.

From my understanding PWM controllers cant be used with my San Ace H101's or other non PWM supported fans. They will click at low/med fan speeds..

Controllers using PWM are actually fine. The advantage is they produce little, if any, heat. The only problem is you'll hear a pulsing or whining sound from the controller at lower voltages.

Incorrect; the fans with a dedicated pin for PWM are simply to allow the gate (transistor) to be in the fan itself and ensure that the RPM sensor is always working correctly.

PWM based fan controllers cal also adjust the speed of fans using a 3-pin header (switches either the +12V or ground on/off at a high frequency); the downside is that if the switching is done on the +12V line then RPM sensor will not work, which is why most PWM fan controllers do the switching on the ground lead so this does not pose a problem.

I have built my own PWM fan controller and can attest to the fact that at low speeds the fan can "growl" or "sing" based on the timing of the PWM clock cycle. PWM circuits have a timing capacitor and my changing that one can eliminate those noises.

Are you suggesting instead of pointing to my guide which has non-pwm fan controllers that you asked for that I just quote my guide to you? Or that I type out my repeated suggestions and the suggestions of most OCN members to you? At the very least you could have taken the recommendation in the guide that you read and asked if anyone else thought there was a better choice for what you were looking for but...I digress and am now off topic...here:

Quote:
Fan controllers are great if you don't want or need your fans running at full speed all the time. Want to bench and stress, turn those babies up! Want to sleep at night, throttle them back. Fan controllers are also great for trying to find that right Positive/Negative pressure for you case (see section 6 for details) Keep in mind that most fans only pull from 1-7 watts but check your fans specs before hooking them up to your particular fan controller.

Performance, high watt / channel:
Performance engineered fan controllers have high enough watt / channel that you can pretty much connect any PC based fan and not worry about frying the controller. If your going with Performance Fans then these controllers are the ones to get. In most cases you can even hookup 2 fans or more per channel.

* Rheobus base model gives 20 watt / channel
* Rheobus Extreme model gives 30 watts / channel.
* Lamptron FC-2 – This controller gives an amazing 45 watts/ channel.

Pretty, but low watt / channel:
If you’re utilizing the controller mainly for case fans then go with the pretty LCD display style design.

* Scythe Kaze Master - 12 watt / channel
P.S. Me reiterating to read my guide is the same as everyone else giving the same suggestions over and over again...if you find it annoying to read my "read my guide" over and over again imagine how much fun it is for our OCN veterans to give the same suggestions over and over again
