You don't need a wind tunnel. Air will always take the path of least resistance.
Just remove the pci slot covers. Most of the air from your side intake fan will travel through this gap. You wont even need another fan. When I get home from work tonight I try it and shoot some pics of the results. The fans I use have decent static so the air stays pretty focused until it reaches the mobo tray and umbrellas out. By removing the pci covers, the air will travel that direction taking the vid card heat with it.

Path of least resistance even when the PCI slots are removed would be towards the exhaust fans which are behind my CPU and above my CPU therefore heat from the GPU would travel there. However, if I cut off access to the CPU from the GPU it will have no where to go but out the back either 1) pci slots or 2) the side exhaust

That's incorrect. You would need to be running with a serious negative pressure for the air to travel up there even with the pci slots covers out. I'll show ya.

I think your pic with the red lines is a pretty good idea really, though you could probably do away with the bottom piece of plexi/etc and have the cards share the intake air with the PSU. So that means just one plexi shelf that would go above your cards. Depending on your case, that means two intake fans providing cool air to cards and PSU.... though I hope you have another fan above that for the rest of the intake, or at least enough total area for intake in the front with powerful rear and top fans to pull it through. The exhaust port on the rear side door is a good idea too.

Well the PSU actually grabs air from the bottom of the case and spits it out the back so the PSU does not need air. My case can actually house 3 front fans if I remove the CD/DVD drives which I wouldn't mind replacing with externals since I never use them. Utilizing say...a nice San Ace fan as the middle front intake and then another San Ace for the exhaust for either the side or pci exhaust fan. This way you would get direct flow to all of the GPUs.

The whole reason I am looking to improve cooling on GPUs right now is so when I do get a 5000 series I would like to ASUS Overclock it to max and install an aftermarket cooler (when one shows up) and I don't want all that excess heat running across my other components.

In the end I may end up getting a new case that fits my mod requirements a little more....that and the fact I have already modded my side panel

on another note I could utilize the bottom fan hmmm....revising picture...

How is this? That way I have 2 fans for the CPU/mobo for the 2 exhaust and the GPUs will get a 1:1 in/out.

put this at the opening of the windtunnel. i would cover the fan with an air filter just to be safe..

OK here is what I did. I mixed a little of your idea (just to show I'm not hard headed) and a little if mine. I removed the pci plates and mounted a 80mm fan. There is no gap between the vid card, the fan, and the psu. My ambient temp is 21c. The discharge air temp coming off the 80mm is 25c. The back exhaust is 22c. And the top exhaust is also 22c. These are all under idle conditions. So you are on to something. I still don't think it is necessary to make a wind tunnel. But an exhaust fan between the vid card and the psu clearly makes a difference.
I should note that with my case I have a 140mm fan mounted at the top of the case. I forgot this wasn't the Scout forum.

Probably not the most creative thing but I use scythe Kama Stay PCI with 2 120*25mm fans mounted above my Dual Graphics card. It very simple and works really well. I like the way it has multiple installation options to suit dual/multiple video cards. It also cools the area around your graphics cards and allows for installation of a single or double 120*25/120*38mm fan.

I dunno if it can be used as part of a air tunnel of some sort though..
