One of the issue though is amount of work involved vs temp difference. Many time when there so alteration to original flow VS altered flow, the diff is negligible. Thus I agree with your original point.

Some also have to do with your cpu cooler, north bridge cooler. In next post I will outline all I have done and what worked for me. But honestly though, for the users 590, it wont matter (negligible temp difference).

I did this in a fit of brilliance when I first built my rig, and it dropped gpu temps by 20 degrees.

Default What didn't work:

(note, first few exp I have no proof. Just realized I deleted all the old mod photos and temp screenshots)

Needed to remove hot air from msi 8800gts oc'd G80 to stop hot air going top
Trial 1: using double sided tape and installed an 80mm fan behind to aid exhaust.

cpu temp diff : 0
nb temp diff: 0
gpu temp diff: -1 c

Trial 2: Using double sided tape to install a ultra kaze 2k 120mm fan for gpu exhaust

cpu temp diff: 0
nb temp diff: 0
gpu temp diff: -6 c at load

Trial 3: Adding a lian li (rocketfish) fan bracket on top of NB and 8800 gts (with stock lian li fan)

cpu temp diff: - 1 c
nb temp diff: - 2 c
gpu temp diff: - 4 c

This was the bracket used to mount the fan pulling hot air (if you take/took multi var calc) along the x axis, then expelling it behind the case (y axis, where the line from the video card to the cpu cooler is the z axis)

Default What worked:

This will be the quickest fix for your set up as we have similar pcs

I had a true with ultra kaze 2k pusshing to the back of the case, you have an optimus. I had a 8800gts, expelling hot air inside the case, same as you. Finally I had the 750i north bridge expelling hot air towards the gpu (downward), which made it hotter than what you have.

Trial 1:

fitting an high pressure ultra kaze 3k fan (controlled by kaze master) in front of the case in the same elevation as the cpu cooler.

(not my mod)

cpu temp: - 9 c (at load)
nb temp: - 8 c at load, -5 at idle
gpu temp: - 4 c at load

This worked well for the overall temp of the pc. If a 120 mm fan is mounted behind the video card outside the case I am confident gpu temp will drop even further.

Final Trial (best results):

Complete reorganization of air flow
two 120mm fan from top of case direct air below
the cpu cooler fans direct air toward the gpu below
store bough cm690 windowed cased with ultra kaze 2k fan directing air outwards from the side

Downward air flow from top 2 fans:

ultra kaze 2k acting as the only main exhuast fan:

Results:

Cpu temp: - 15-20c at load, -6 at idle
nb temp: -6 c at all times
(gpu was changed from a 8800 gts to a gtx 295)
gpu temp: no data on delta t. idle temp 40-50, load temp never past 69 c

I loved it. But I think for most people the best thing to do is just add an good fan like trial 1 in this post. Saves you trouble and time. Futhermore it is quite effective.

Default More experiments in the future?

I wasn't satisfied. I still thought conventional cooling patterns is too inefficient. So I decided to copy what silverstone did with the ravens. However during the project my mobo died. After RMA I became a mmorpger and pushed everything back. This is what it looks like:

there was no doubt it was the best setup I ever had in terms of cooling. Will try to get it done after this semester's over.

Unfort, it isn't what the OP is after. He wants no hot air from the gpu altering the temps of the nb and cpu. The fan would no doubt help gpu temps, but it may not decrease cpu/mobo temps.

Ok, here are a few pics of what I did. I have a R4 120 on the side panel and a 80mm just below the vid card. With this set up I have nearly eliminated any warm air from the gpu traveling up the case.

I looked at all your pictures and got an idea of everything you did...I want to take a deeper look at it later when I can get some more time. My weekend is shot for now. Thanks for all you put together +rep

So did it help your temps dkev? I would imagine with an aftermarket cooler that fan would help even more...and that was definitely one of the ideas I was going for. +rep

Ya, 3c difference between the new exhaust and the exhaust above the vid card. Also I should point out, that I have never heard my gpu fan at 100% during gaming. I manually set it to 100% and it's about 50 decibels. I don't think it's even been at 50%. Although it does idle at 51c and 57c under load.

Sounds about right since your GPU doesn't get too hot under load.

My concern is if I go crossfire with some 5k series or wait for a 5kx2 card and getting an after market cooler like the artic cooling designs will have(crosses fingers).

The setup you have going should work pretty well for what I want to do. It will be a while but can't wait to actually test it under those circumstances. I am sure soon there will be others that might find that info interesting as well
