Hey guys,
I have an XFX GeForce 8600GT that has a fan that is kicking the bucket and it is slowly starting to drive me insane with all the noise it is making. I had an idea that I might try using some zip ties to hold a fan against the stop heatsink instead of replacing the entire unit. Is this possible? Or should I do something else? Also, the fan that came with my XIGMATEK HDT-SD964 92mm Rifle is really loud as well. I was wondering if it possible to somehow attach a larger quieter fan to the heatsink itself. I was thinking about going with a large 120mm arctic cooling fan instead of the stock one. I have one now inside my case and it is pretty quiet. Just wondering what you guys thought. Oh and I don't have much money which is why I am not going passive on my GPU - plus I don't think I am going to have my GPU for very much longer.. thanks guys Cheers

If your 8600 is the one with the dogtags on the cooler, I have the exact same one. My fan was dying so I took off the heatsink. On the bottom there are small screws that remove the shroud and 3 that hold in the fan on top. If you have a spare fan, you could rig it to blow onto the fins of the heatsink. Right now I'm running no fan, just passive cooling and it maxes about 70 during gaming and 60 while browsing web. I know it's toasty but its just a temporary solution.

I have been reading that more and more people have been having problems with the fans on these cards. I forgot that there is that shroud that would have to be removed. If I did rig a fan that way how would I power it? Could I use what is powering the fan that is currently there? Cheers

The current fan is powered by a little wierd 2 pin connector, If you wanted to cut the wire and splice it, you could, but I would use a case fan plugged to the mobo or powersupply if the fan isn't too loud.

Hey,
Well I took your advice and removed the shroud as well as the small fan - what a horrible disgusting job that was. I managed to rig up a HUGE 120mm Arctic Cooling fan as a replacement. Everything is up and running and working great however I am wishing now that I had not gotten this particular fan because of its PWM. PWM connectors are in short supply in my case (Is this the right term for the 4-pin fan connector?). I think I am going to get back and get just a regular fan with a 3 pin connector. Canadacomputers has some nice Scythe fans that I might get to replace it and use the new Arctic Cooling fan to replace the one that is on my CPU heatsink now. Anyway thank you for your help! Cheers
