Default Lapped Megahalem Results (Not 56K Friendly)

So I came from a Tuniq 120 Tower. Was fine for my Dual Core E7200...failed pretty miserably when I put it on the Quad. Here are load temps @ 3.2GHz. I wasn't even comfortable leaving it at that speed, but wanted to show how bad it was.

My new Arctic Cooling MX-3

Here's the Megahalem Box

Opening the Box

First Sight of the Cooler

Finish from the Factory

I used A Sharpie to cover the base in a solid color so that I would notice changes as I was making passes at 220 grit Sandpaper.

As you can see, my Megatron was convex with a high point in the center. Took me quite a while to get it flat. Here we are done with 400 Grit Sandpaper. I guess I forgot to take a picture after 220, sorry.

After 800 Grit Sandpaper.

After 1000 Grit Sandpaper.

After 1500 Grit Sandpaper.

After 2000 Grit Sandpaper.

The following pictures are after polish.

Reflection from my Samsung 205BW

As good of Focus as I could get head on.

Quarter Test

In the middle of mounting, I find out that the holes that the two screws with shoulder/spring are too small. The sleeve had a taper to it which needed to be removed. Not a large Problem, just another headache.

Here you can see that the screw wouldn't go through the hole.

Back from the garage and the screw goes in just fine. I was careful to use the right size bit and only take out the taper.

And here are those beloved Load Temperatures. Although I didn't take a picture of it, I used the small dot method of applying the MX-3 found Here. I believe with both my Quad and the Sink being lapped I will not need anymore then that. A quick test between the two and it spread out all the way to the edges with very little extra.

I apologize for not installing before the lap job and seeing the temperature difference, I just couldn't stomach wasting the MX-3. That stuff was $$$ for thermal interfacing material. After all was said and done, a huge success. BTW...this is with the same fan as the Tuniq had from stock so even airflow is identical. I will be replacing it with Push/Pull Yate Loon 120 High Speed fans when they come in.

Nice, looks like a mighty fine lap job.

And it makes sense for the same reason I'm about to lap mine. He already had his cpu lapped, which means it will not conform to the basic ihs flatness so the Mega's base is not machined to match it accordingly.(of course I am mainly guessing here, but the mega does have machine marks on it slightly, so we know it's not 100% truly flat. Or at least I felt/saw them on mine) (not as bad as the true though.)

Wish you did a before and after, but none the less great job. And nice drop in temps.

And yea, I had the same freaking problem on that mounting plate. You'd think they would bore it out correctly. But nothing a file couldn't take care of.

I agree 220 was a bit rough, was going to start with 400, but when I saw how concave the sink was, I didn't wanna be there all night at 400. Also, I only had one sheet of 400 for the interim step, not enough to get the base flat. Had lots of 220.

I would have to say that Prolimatech also doesn't think people are using lapped CPU's. I used a razor blade to test for flatness, and mine had a high center which wouldn't do well for a lapped processor. Figured I couldn't hurt the thing.

What he said. And I agree...bore it out right. I was glad I had my drill set at home or else I wouldn't have had the right size.

I've been thinking about lapping my megatron too, because I paint and body work cars and have unlimited access to all the necessary tools and material needed to lap. But what I want to know is, do I need to lap my cpu too? If so I how do I take the hsf off the cpu.

OK...you don't take the hsf off of the CPU. You lap the IHS, the Integrated Heat Sink. This is the Silver cap that's on top of your chip. And no, you don't have to, but it will provide the very best thermal environment. This is because it will minimize gaps between the processor and your megatron. Any more questions feel free to ask.

Since your IHS is lapped this kind of makes it pointless for me and would have loved to see some before and after. Higher overclock would be nice to look at also.

The thing I do like seeing is that you have equal temps across all cores which is due to a great lap job.

Hopefully this will get some people to lap theirs that do not have their IHS lapped so some of us that are still non-lapped can see some temps changes.
