![]() Ok, first off I am completely new to overclocking. I have never attempted it before so I'm learning as I go. I just recently assembled my new PC and installed windows 7. I have overclocked the i7-860 CPU from the BIOS from 2.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz I tested it out with Prime95 and I used core temp to monitor the temp. What I'd like to know is this a good or normal for this particular OC? I am using a thermaltake Silent 1156 heatsink/cooler I bought for $20 so it's not the greatest. Please let me know and thanks!

for such a small OC those are a bit high, but you can still push a little farther.
might try reseating your heatsink. what tim are you using?

I agree that you will need a better cooler like say a mugen II or maga or even a xiggy dark knight to do a better job at cooling and achieve higher clocks.
you screenies suggest that you do not have speedstep, eist, and c1e disabled in bios. As far as your idle temps go they seem close to ok but load temps are what counts when overclocking and the ambient temps play a large role in where your temps will go.

Hey all,
__________________thanks...I believe I only did the stress test for like 10 minutes. I think you're suppose to do it for more then an hour right? I did disable speedstep in the BIOS...how can you tell that it's enabled?

because of your frequency. they are different for load and idle.

12 to 24 hours will usually please the masses. What are you using to stress test?

I'm using Prime95.
__________________Sounds like I will wait to get a better heatsink/cooler first. I want to reach 3.8Ghz and run it for 24 hours. I want to have a stable machine obviously. I know that over clocking is an art and so far I pretty much suck at it. hehe. Also, just so no one recommends this..but I will never lap my CPU.

also, lapping is a personal decision. nothing wrong with not doing. especially with I7's because the IHS is already pretty flat.
