Default CPU Cooler Question!

I have stock cooling (socket 775) and im buying "The Dark Knight" CPU Cooler. I have done a bit of research and cannot figure this out..

I want to not have to disassemble my entire PC to install this cooler and was wondering if that was necessary. Please let me know it comes tommorow in the mail and id like to know if i should expect a quick 5 minute installation or an hour+ installation.

ull have to take off ur side panel, and just unseat the cpu, actually u wont even have to do that. ull have to open it, take off stock cooler if it has one and reseat the new dark knight onto ur chip. with or without thermal paste its ur decision but not that hard and very easy. coupole screws and and some locking clips

With the 775, you don't need any backplates.

The Dark Knight is a great cooler, btw

Just do what jfizz said, but might I suggest cleaning off the CPU and wiping down the cooler part of the aftermarket cooler and then wipe down the chip (just a rag or something, clean it up a bit) and then apply some thermal paste to it. AS5 works nicely

For the Intel, the Dark Knight comes with a bracket that mounts to the cooler which then screws in to the board. I don't remember if it needed a backplate as I use AMD but I know it came with one.

Just do this:

Turn off PC.
Unplug PC and everything connected.
Place PC on it's side on a table ~3ft+ off the ground
Take off the side panel so you can see all the hardware in your tower
Touch the side of the case or otherwise ground yourself
Unplug stock cooler, undo pins and gently pull off.
Inspect CPU surface, clean off.
Grab your aftermarket cooler, clean it if it came with thermal paste but only if you're applying your own, be sure to remove any pads on the contact plate (the block that touches the CPU ).
Figure out which way the fan pushes air and position the cooler likewise (if the fan sucks air, make it face your intake fans and have the rear push out to the exhausts, like with mine).
Place cooler firmly on CPU, use pins and make sure it's a tight fit (just push it around a tiny bit, if it comes lose it's not tight enough or you did the pin wrong).
Slowly lift the case up, inspect further.
It should be good, so go ahead and put everything back on (side panel and all your cables).
Boot up your PC and check out temps in BIOS, hopefully they're lower

EDIT
If that cooler comes with a backplate there's a reason for it. You'll need to see if your motherboard tray is removable. If not, you'll have to pull out your board and seat it yourself.

Is it really that much of a hassle to pull your mobo out of your case? I mean I can take it out, replace cooler (with backplate) and put it back in and have it ready to go in under 10 minutes.

Well, if he's relatively new at the process, it can take hours. Plus the troubleshooting when it doesn't work because one of his standoffs was ripped out and he's wondering why it won't boot, and then his PSU dies because stuff just happens like that.

Yes, that's a true story. Happened a couple weeks ago.

Ok. That's why you're here though, to expand on your experiences and learn with every step.

I think the dark knight comes with a backplate that will need installation (as does any good cooler) so removing the motherboard (unless you have a removable motherboard tray or a hole on the backside of it) is a necessity. Just look at where everything is plugged in, unplug it, remove the screws and take the mobo out. Just be careful and nothing will get damaged. The dark knight has a pretty easy installation from what I've read so far so it shouldn't require that much tinkering.

Good luck and enjoy your new overclocks
