Default Undervolting Panaflo U1s

I have two panaflo u1s in my pc connected to a fc-2. The problem is if I turn them down to abit past half they shut down. They also start to make a ringing noise if they o to far? Is this nemal for the fans or a problem with the fc-2

Some earlier FC-2s had a problem with making noise when undervolting fans, but newer ones don't. My U1BX doesn't make any unwanted noise when I undervolt it, but it does have a high starting voltage compared to my S-Flex and San Ace. Turning it down past halfway and having it shut down sounds pretty normal in that case, so the noise may be attributed to the FC-2.

Yea I emailed performance pcs to ask em about it. The thing is the panaflos can't even go below what would be 2 on a clock

Yup, pretty normal. My Delta AFB1212SHE's, and Panaflo's do the same thing.

This is why all fans should be PWM.

Yep, this is a known problem. I just went through this with Gary over at Sidewinder Computer. Sadly, it also happens with the F3 and F4 controllers; could just be some old stock but I gave up trying to get them to work.

PWM doesn't stop the fans voltage range. Even if the fan magically turned into a PWM fan it can only run under a certain voltage before it stops operating.

Example:
Quote:
Sanyo Denki
Model No 9G1212H1011
Size 120mm x 120mm x38mm
Operating Range 7 -13.8

Delta
Model No PFB1212UHE-F00
Size 120mm x 120mm x38mm
Operating Range 8 -13.2
Again, PWM or not doesn't matter, it matters what the fans operating range is. Most 25mm CPU fans have a lower starting operating range ~5v and most controllers only tone down your fan to 5v. My San Ace on my fan controller shuts off around 11 o'clock on the dial which is about right for the above stated 7v start point. Most likely the Panaflo's have a starting voltage of around 8.5v.

All 3 of mine start at around 6 volts, actually.

13.8, huh? I hadn't noticed that. Mine starts somewhere between 4 and 5 volts, though. I'd like to add an observation, though, since while trying to get my Falcon working, I'd left my side panel off without knowing it when I powered on. I looked at my San Ace while it was running and had an idea. It seems to be common that certain San Ace models will squeal before starting, but I did a little experiment and found there's more to it than that.

At about 3.5 volts, I started hearing squealing. Scaling VERY slowly up to 4 volts, the squealing intensified and the fan started twitching back and forth, like it was trying to start. A little bit above 4 volts, it fully started and the squealing gradually stopped. None of my other fans twitch like that below starting voltage.

Guess it depends on fan controller Chunky. The Extreme Rheobus shuts my San Ace off as stated...

Now that I think about it...they shut off around 9 o'clock...my photographic memory just popped back into place :P

EDIT: Just looked supposedly the FC2 can give 0-12v output while the Rheobus Extreme gives 4-12v....now im really confused. So your San Ace shuts off at 4v or basically the dial is at 10 o'clock? Voltage output on these fan controllers always have a error of +/- 10% I guess that sounds about right if my controller starts at 4v...

How quiet can San aces get? Under 30db? So I'm guessing it would be better to get rid of panaflos and fc-2 and get a rheobus and San aces?
