Default Cpu cooler question

Are coolers suppose to blow air into the heat sink or out?

Either way, usually the fan blows air into the heatsink. What type of cooler?

If you are referring to the stock HS, or traditional horizontal fan orientation, then the fan blows the air towards the motherboard.

There has been many experiments regarding this, but it is much more efficient to blow the air towards the motherboards, rather than away from it.

Also, this aids in cooling of some components on the motherboard.

If you are referring to the VERTICAL heatsinks (like Megahalem or TRUE), than the air blows towards the rear of the case most of the time, or sometimes to the top of the case from the bottom.

I'm more specifically talking about a vertical cooler (like the zerotherm nirvana) but I thought they both worked the same way.

My heatsink pulls air in through the fan, and pushes air out through the back fins. Depending on the orientation of the heatsink, the flow of air can be changed. I can push air at my PSU, towards my graphics card, or at my RAM. I push the air towards my exhaust fan in the back

Push/pull designs work great, like on a Megahalems. Pull air in, AND push it out. It's great.

You are suppose to PUSH air through the heat sink. But you can pull air through, although I personally do not recommended.

What do you guys mean either way? Do you guys mean either way as in you can Technically have all the fans in a case act like an intake (meaning a bad idea) or do you guys mean both ways are effective?

Some people use one fan pulling air through the heatsink and exhausting out the back, but I don't think it works as well. The fan would be blowing air the same way, but attached to the back of the heatsink.

Let me just make sure I got this right.

(heatsink)<-----(fan)

This is the better set up?

Correct. If you wanted to do a Push-Pull it'd be:
<-----(fan) (heatsink) <----(fan).

One fan pushes air through the cooler, and the other one helps pull the air through. If you happen to decide to do push-pull, remember to get identical fans (same RPMs and CFM).
