Default How to apply Shin-Etsu?

I recently came across a tube of Shin-Etsu, and reading that it was a better paste than OCZ Freeze or IC Diamond.

Calling it a "paste" couldn't have been more misleading.

The TIM was so thick and I had so much trouble spreading it that I gave up.

Does anyone out there know how to properly apply the Shin-Etsu? It seems like a terrible idea to let this go to waste!

you can spread it yourself or let the heatsink spread it. Next time just get MX-3

Spread it with a credit card.

It is SOOOOOO easy to spread and is top notch

pea-sized portion on the middle of the cooler, put the heatsink on and screw it down. then take it off and the pressure should've spread it quite a bit

Try running the tube under hot water for a few seconds (or longer) to "soften" it up some. But yeah I've read the stuff is about as thick as peanut butter. I thought AS5 was thick enough, but daaayum lol.

Theres the microwave trick where you run the shin etsu tube for like 15 sec in the microwave. Warms the stuff up but I don't know if microwaving will somehow negatively impact the compound.

Best way so far is to get a cup/container thats full of really hot steamy water and just throw the tube in there for like 5-10 min. A pair of tweezers would be handy when taking out the tube but it should be a lot easier to spread the stuff.

Still nowhere as easy as AS5 or OCZ freeze but Shin Etsu spreads really easy if you use something flat/square shaped to apply pressure on it. I have a small transparent plastic square that I use for applying SE x23 7783D. Put a small peasize of the stuff on cpu ihs then place the square over it apply some pressure and drag the plastic square over the ihs surface to spread the stuff. Kind of trick but gets me better temps then usual pea in center + jam heatsink ontop right away.

Just sit the tube over top of a lightbulb, i.e on top of lamp shade. Leave for 10-15mins should be nice and easy to spread then assuming your using incandescent bulbs.

This is the correct method, or the best method, anyways.

Give it a shot!

I have several syrieges of both X23 and G751... speaking from experience, the best application method is to leave the syringe in a cup of warm water before application. The line method tends to lead to over-application due to the size of the nozzle and viscosity of the TIM.

A small line about the size of a grain of rice yields the best results IMO. The red is an estimation of how much I used, and the spread is well - the spread:

This is how I've always done it. And I've been using nothing but Shin Etsu x23 and sometimes G751 when I'm out of the X23....for probably 2 years now? Ever since it came out anyway...
