Default Thermal Paste and i7 920

I still have some Arctic Silver 5, but I just bought some OCZ Freeze.

I ran a search and I am seeing that you should use a rice size of Freeze in the middle of the CPU.

I just want to verify this, because the i7 is a quad, and I thought you were supposed to use the line down the middle of the cpu, not a rice size of paste.

I've always used a the rice grain spec. Probably just because it's what the manufacturer specifies. Either way, the pressure from the heatsink will give the paste a nice spread, granted you apply the paste on the center of the CPU.

I used OCZ Freeze and did the grain of rice method, then pressure of the Mega to spread it. Seems to be working fine, although the first try I put way more TIM than necessary.

1 more vote for the rice-grain method. I used it on a Mugen2/i7 combo. I recently changed from a C0 to a D0 stepping and saw a nice even pattern covering the IHS. My hottest core runs 72c under P95

You can always try it and pull the heat sink to check the pattern to be sure

I take a small dab into the center then spread with a credit card for the most even and best contact.

I second this. I learned this trick off of youtube awhile back. Basically put one little dot in the middle of the cpu and then rip off a piece of a shopping bag, rap it around your finger, and smooth it out over the entire cpu. That way, you get a nice even coat over the entire cpu for better contact with the heatsink

And with that method, comes a ton of air bubbles!

Same way I apply toothpaste. One small pea sized drop. Then use the flat side / back side to smear it around.
