HD 5870 random voltage bump to 1.65v?!

OK so ive been running into this issue for a day or so now.

while stressing, or gaming, my vGPU will randomly bump itself to 1.65v, resulting in MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF HEAT. from the gpu, and from vregs. most often leading to a gsod if i dont catch it in time.

sometimes i can catch it and alt tab, or close furmark, because i can hear the fan speed up from 50%~ to 100% quite quickly.

anyone else has experienced this, or maybe even have a fix for it?

im going to start a stress in hopes i can catch a screenie before another gsod.

1.65?! Mine isn't volt moded and it only reaches 1.19v on load. I believe the 5870 gets around 1.2 volts on stock as well.

GSOD? you mean BSOD right?

I would RMA that card. I dont know any remedies for voltage spiking on a GPU

I'd try the old fashion driver install but I doubt that will fix the issue

Edit:
Wait I just thought of something. OP do you have AB installed?

gsod, is more like, 100% artifact covered screen until reboot, or GPU driver reset, which doesnt happen all the time and usually takes 5-10 minutes to reset in such a scenario anyways.

but yeah, ive been stressing since my last post and it hasnt happened. but ill definately try to catch it if it happens again, for now its a thread on hold i guess.

I've seen this before - it has happened on my 5870.

It's apparently an issue that happens when (a) you have a 5xxx series GPU under stress [it happened to me when running FurMark as well], AND (b) when you're running more than one (or in some cases ONLY one] GPU voltage monitoring tool at the same time [i.e., GPU+Z + Afterburner, or Everest]. The voltage spikes to the max unlocked core - mine was 1.5v.

There was a thread on this over at the Everest forums. Check it out.

I only run Afterburner now, and if I need to open GPU-Z, I close afterburner first if the GPU will be under stress. Bizarre? Yes. Verifiable? Also yes.

PS: You'll notice that in Afterburner voltage MONITORING is off by default. It's because voltage monitoring is what is causing the issue. Run just afterburner with voltage monitoring off, and you won't have the problem.

This happened to me too and it turned out GPU-z and Everest were not getting along. I was getting Vertical Line Crashes constantly. GPU and VRM temps were skyrocketing and GPU VRM was hitting 1.65v
Anyway I only use Everest now. Problem solved and no more crashing with lines and extreme temps. Hope I didnt damage the card any though
