It should be fine. It is preferable to have a USB drive though.

I've flashed my 680i, 780i, an 790i all with burning the flashing utility to a DVD directly from the EVGA site, and it all went well.

I'd say it's far more safe than flashing from Windows, and USB is a preferred method, but I found no problems at all with flashing via a DVD.

i used to keep a floppy drive handy (still have 2 packed away). But with current tech, and the price of a 2Gb USB stick being only about $5.00, I have a DOS bootable drive with bios flashing tools and useful programs like memtest.

I vote you invest in a USB drive:

As for flashing with a DVD disc, you can if you can make it bootable with the bios flashing program and the bios:

You have to make it a bootable Disc with the included Installer stuff from Gigabyte. This is hy USB is preferreed as it's easier to load the bios up.

For Gigabyte, you format the USB Stick as FAT, then paste the .bin file if that's the format of the BIOS onto the ROOT of the USB drive, and then reboot and go into BIOS and choose the Flash Utility, or the F key that is for the Flashing utility.

After you're in the Utility, just follow the prompts.

There are numerous guides on this on the internet, as well as the Gigabyte site.

There should be step by step instructions for this specifically on the Gigabyte site where you get the BIOS update from..
