Default Christmas Upgrades (always fun)

I'm doing some annual upgrades to my computer this Christmas season and was looking for some hearty advice!

Currently I an running my AM2 X2 4200 EE @ 2.21 GHz (210x11) on an ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe with an EVGA 7950 GT KO Superclocked (512mb) video card...

I'm still using the POS power supply I received a year ago (with my case)... It randomly cuts power and resumes only with a beating [literally rattling the case (Sometimes this gets a little violent )]... So this needs replaced...

I'm pretty disappointed with my FPS on COD4\TF2 with maxed settings, so I'm also looking into CPU\GPU upgrades...

So far I've came up with this
At the moment I'm young and jobless (hehe)... Will be getting my license soon, so I need to save some money for insurance, so I can't blow all on computer parts...

Here's some other options I wanted to throw at you...
CPU:
X2 6000 Windsor [90nm]
X2 6400 Windsor [90nm]
X2 5000 Brisbane [65nm]
X2 5200 Brisbane [65nm]
Phenom 9500 (low possibility of me buying)

GPU:
EVGA 8800 GT 512mb
+$289.99
-Comes with Quake Wars [don't really want]
EVGA 8800 GTS 512mb
+$359.99
+Comes with Crysis [awesome game](basically -$40/$50)

PSU:
Anything modular and >500W is cool
Good quality PSU >500W are nice...
OCZ 700W GameXStream
OCZ 600W GameXStream
Corsair 520HX 520W modular

Also instead of making another thread... Here's a build I'm making for a friend soon you can rate...

I'm going to be gaming in 19" widescreen or 22" widescreen most of the time, and in a few test the 8800 GTS received around 10 fps more in most games than the 8800 GTS in 1600x1400...

I also like that the 2 slot cooler is quieter and cools better than a 1 slot cooler... The GTS will probably be about $50 more and use a tad more power...

Really this thread was asking about 6000/6400 90nm or 5000/5200 65nm.... I don't know which to pick really...

I've heard a lot of good reviews about the 5000+ BE and that it can oc like crazy. It's also 65nm, which is a plus.

In your case, I'd get a good power supply and perhaps the video card..
Then OC that Brisbane you have. It may see 3G and you should game fine with an 8800 series card.
If the CPU sucks at OCing, then consider something else. The 5000 BE will do no less than the mid 3200 range and perhaps but not for sure even as high as 3.4G.

I only have a X2 4200 EE (energy efficient) 90nm Windsor now...

I definitely need a new PSU, so I'm buying the OCZ 700W GameXStream for sure...

I was thinking about the 5000/5200 Brisbane or a 6000/6400 Windsor

How much more do you think a 5200 (2.7 stock) will overclock than a 5000 (2.6 stock)...

The 6000/64000 are 3/3.2 GHz stock respectively, but they run hot and their overclocks cap out pretty low...

Well, the best bang for the buck is the 5000+ @ about $63 IMHO. But who knows if it will OC as well as the 5000+ BE which is usually 2x as much money.

It's not much more for a 6400 Windsor than a 5000 BE

A 3.2 GHz 5000 BE won't be as fast as the 6400 Windsor @ 3.2 GHz, due to cache\L1\L2 latency and the extra 512kb per core L2 in the Windsor...

Overtime the Windsor will cost more for electricity, but I'm not paying the bill :O lol

I wan't the fastest possible non-Phenom AM2 CPU... 5000 BE, 5200 BE, 6000, or 6400...

Overclocked the safest I can with an AC64 Freezer Pro

I know I can get the G2 stepped 5000 BE to 3.3 at about 1.45v [maybe 1.5] safe
I'm pretty sure it's possibly to get a X2 6400 to 3.5 with decent air cooling...

It's really a battle between the X2 6400 BE and the 5000 BE... I know the X2 6400 BE is stronger, but I have a feeling inside of me that keeps wanting me to get the 5000 BE...

Actually tests show that that the X2 6400 Stock is better at gaming than the 5000 BE @3.3 (200x16.5)

You are going to notice a performance increase in gaming benchmarks with the extra L2Cache, but in real life play it will not be that noticeable. I will reiterate what Duke stated, if gaming is your goal then the Windsor 4200+ will be more than sufficient, and if you just had to upgrade look at a Brisbane 5000+. As long as you have a good motherboard capable of a decent FSB then there really is not an advantage to the BE. You are paying for a Brisbane core with an unlocked multiplier, and unless you have a crappy motherboard, which you don't, there really is not advantage in my opinion.

The fact of the matter is with you running what looks like three dimms with each containing a 1GB of Ballistix your overclocking potential will be limited. You should just run a 2x1GB kit or invest in a 2x2GB kit if overclocking and peak performance is your goal. You can get a 2x2GB kit for a little over $100 now and many around that range have 1000MHz potential out of the 800MHz kits.

The Duke said a Brisbane would be good, not a X2 4200....

There's definitely a difference between a CPU that overclocks to 2.4 GHz and one that overclocks to at least 3.2 GHz.... (4200 vs. 5000 BE)

There are also quite a few differences between the 5000 and 5000 BE...
The new 5000 BE uses G2 stepping which decreases power consumption while increasing overclocking potential... Unlocked multiplier means I do not have to raise my FSB and crank the speed of everything else up (PCI\NB)...

I have a 2x1 kit and 2x512 kit which both use identical chips of different memory values (2) 1gb (D9GHM) and (2) 512mb (D9GHM)... I've taken out the (2) 512mb and haven't gotten any better overclocks... So I'm leaving in for now...
