Default Building an office comp for my mom

Well my mom's pos dell has frustrated me to the point where I think I'm gonna convince her to let me build her a rig. All she does is word/powerpoint/internet, so nothing fancy. Trying to keep it as cheap as possible but still decent and it's probably going to last 4-5 years.

Mobo: MSI K9AG Neo2 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813130119
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103774
Ram: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820231098
Hard Drive: Western Digital 250GB http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822136161
DVD Drive: Samsung http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827151153
OS: Vista Premium http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16832116202
Case: Up in the air, I'm gonna let her choose one she likes
Power Supply: Depends if the case has one, otherwise Antec Earthwatts 380W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371005

Don't need a monitor/speakers/mouse/keyboard. Priced a little under $400 without the case/power supply. Suggestions are welcome!

That's pretty good. If it's just for office work you're not going to need amazing hardware.

Only thing i would change is get a better PSU.

Are you gonna be using a graphics card? If so you've forgotten it, but that's not a bad build for under 400 bucks. In fact it's a fair bit better than the rig im gaming on! If you wanna get the price down i'd downgrade the hdd aswell. Depending on what you guys will be saving on there a 120 should do fine. (does me well and im saving a fair few movies on there aswell.)

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817709010

Cut back 1 GB on the MEMORY, if you change the OS to Windows XP Home or Pro, she's just doing office work anyways.

Without MIR, that's a VERY good build, well done. To gfreeman1 that PSU is fantastic. The earthwatt series are excellent PSU made by Seasonic. The great efficiency will keep her electric bill low and they should last for years and years. And there's no way that system will ever break 250W.

If you're okay with a slightly higher initial cost and MIR, we can get the cost down to around $330-350 with the case. Let me know if you're interested and I'll throw up my suggestions later tonight. But for no MIR, I'd say you're good to go. Oh, just one more thing, you could save a little tiny bit by going with a 160GB drive; does she really need 250GB? Just a thought.

Na, no need for a video card.

I chose Vista because I think it's at the point where it's stable enough and I don't really want to have my mom upgrade it in a year or two.

Thanks for the complements. Yeah, I could probably get her a 160GB. On her Dell right now she's using only 15 GB but it's cheap and it might get filled up later. As for the MIR, sure why not. I'm not a big fan of them but I'll go for them if they save alot.

Thanks for the replies!

The power supply is plenty, also I may go with 4Gb of ram and the 250Gb if you want to last five years but other than that, its a good build.

Ok, if MIR are ok you can save a little extra $. Unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of money saving deals at the moment, but you can definitely save on the memory with MIR and by getting a smaller HDD and a cheap case (she doesn't need more than one exhaust fan for a stock system with no VGA).

$33.50 - 2x1GB Patriot Extreme DDR2 800 CAS4 (after $40 MIR)
$22 - Rosewill case, 120mm fan
$50 - 160GB WD HDD

And if you can get your hands on a cheap or free PCIx16 graphics card (check our online deals, or maybe ebay or a friend), then you can go Intel with this build. Almost any card is better than onboard, so you don't need anything fancy:

$60 - ABIT P35 (after $30 MIR)
$75 - Intel E2160

You'd definitely need a video card though because there's no onboard video with that P35. There's a quality 430W PSU from thermaltake for $28 after $12 MIR, but it's 65% efficient and I think you'll make the $12 back in energy savings a few times over by going with the earthwatts.
