Default [Build]: My first. Budget gaming and possible OC in mind

Hey guys,
I've had a few posts asking about what products etc to purchase for my first build.

I've owned one brand new computer before and it's the one im currently using. It's an athlon 3000+, 1G of dodgy ram, a 6600gt that doesnt fit in my slot properly and a crappy motherboard that has only two 3-pin connectors, one of which is taken up by the cpu fan i know that migh not matter to some but it's the most frustrating thing. Oh and did i mention my case is falling to pieces?

Anyway, i've decided on what parts im buying and i've already ordered and recieved two of them. Heres the list:

- Asus m2n-slideluxe (purchases from scorpian technology and recieved it in 1 day)

- AMD athlon 64 x2 6000+ @ 3.0Ghz (also from scorp tech and have recieved)

- 8800gt or something similar, 512mb preferably. (just one atm, when budget allows ill upgrade to sli)

- 2G of ram, preferably crucial ballistix (upgrade to 4 eventually)

- 120G sata hdd (dont need much space as i have 2 external 320G drives)

- any decent dvd/rw drive

- i was gonna use my current psu, but have decided against it. If anyone knows of a decent cheap clean psu then please post or pm

- A raidmax smildon case (from pccasegear, arrived. And damn it's sexy)

- also unsure of what sort of cooling to get, just random fans for the case, but cpu cooling, not sure if i wanna go with stock. So any suggestions there?

Any input is most welcome, pics will come eventually, although i don't expect to have all the parts for at least 3 weeks, so thanks guys.

Looks good! Will you overclock? Considering the ram you're getting im going to guess you will, so throw a cooler on that cpu, make it look sexy through that window! I would suggest-
45$-best
30$-good
15$-If you're really cheap
Is your PSU a hiper type R? I have the 580 watt hiper type r, its a nice psu, keep it lol.

I would have gone with Intel but that's just me I guess, the GT is good and I recommend this for your DVD/R:

Definately the expensive one thanks for the info, yeah i've got that psu, it is really nice, but the rear fan died and i still can't find a replacement. Any ideas?

I would definately like to learn to overclock, so yeah not sure if i'll watercool eventually either.

Learn to overclock? Look what forum your on! There are tons of how to threads, it's daunting at first but fun once you get the hang of it. Also, if you shell out a few extra bucks, for a cooler you could get this.
it's a 9700 not a 9500 like the other one, only about 4 or 5 degrees cooling difference, but look how sexy it is!!!

Yeah im really scared about doing it. I might try a little on my current system, i'll need a new case and a few cooling products though. The acrylic fell out of the side of my case and i've sinced used it. So airflow is terrible! But yeah i haven't even looked at the overclocking threads yet to be honest I joined here for the case modding which im really into yet haven't done much of hehe. *blushes*

SEXY! hehe im sure i can afford a few more bucks for that thing. It does look very nice. Umm do you know any decent graphics card coolers? I want them to take up only 1 slot.

Thanks heaps for all this info.

Also guys, this is a pretty nub question. When putting my heatsink onto the cpu, do i have to use something to keep it on there? I've seen this white paste stuff being used before. What is that? And is it a nessesity?

Thanks

*Edit*
The cooler i have in mind for my grraphics card(s) is this.
What do you think?
Also i think i'll stick with the $45 zalman cpu cooler, as the later model got a few bad reviews on egg, plus i like the copper look, and it'd match my gpu coolers

Woah dude do not for any reason not put some form of thermal past on the HS. You will burn that sucker up in minutes. Theremal paste is the white goop. Basically it fills in all the little miniscule pits in the metal for both the HS and the cpu and it also provides better thermal abilities than air does. It DOES NOT keep your heat sink on your cpu.

As for the Heatsink, there is a special mechanism on the board and HS to lock it in place. Refer to the instruction manual that came with your CPU/HS combo.

A HS fan for your gpu is not necessary, since the one on there is adequate, if you have decent airflow in your case. If you are going to oc it I suggest watercooling, imho.

For the CPU, I am so envious of my customer. He got the Ultra Chilltec. It uses a TEC, thermo electric cooler, to cool of the cpu in conjuction with a massive heatsink and fan. It runs about $120 and will work with AMD as much as Intel.

One thing I might add, from what I have seen in these forums, is that AMDs and some other mid to lower end Intels will not show a great performance increase from SLIing 2 Nvidia 8800's because the CPU will bottleneck. My old setup was 2 Nvidia 7600's in SLI and I saw no problems but they don't match the performance of the 8800GT. If you are looking for a good video card that will play most games on high a single 8800GT is fantastic. I love mine!
