i would recommend the MSI K9A2 platinum, it's the ultimate board out there.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130136
it's $20 off w/ free shipping.

you may want a phenom, but i would recommend a dual core athlon for now, the 5000+ x2 BE is $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103194

for RAM i like the g.skill (2gb x2) model, this is $100 w/ free shipping (i'm going to buy one of these myself, and buy DDR2 now before the rise in price.)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...45&Tpk=g.skill

The PSU i think is the most important part of the computer, for you i would recommend a 850W PSU, i've heard some good things about the antec PSUs.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371009

now i know you want to stick with your 8800, but i would recommend to you the 3870.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102719

you probably have the CD/DVD drives and Harddrives.

why would you crossfire if your keeping your 8800gt?

go with the asus crosshair mb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131593
the 5000+be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103194
2*1gb g.skill ddr2 800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231087
another 8800gt for sli
a pc power and cooling psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703005
and that should leave you all kinds of money for hds, and optical drives

Well, does it absolutely need to be an AMD system? Intel is better value for money. I'll assume you want to stay AMD, in which case I think the MSI board, processor choice and Gskills from the second post are all good choices.

I would recommend not shelling out for an 850W PSU for a single video card 5000+BE system. An ANTEC Earthwatts 500W PSU (made by Seasonic) for $50-60 should be more than adequate for your needs.

I like my Seagate 7200 250GB drive; that's a lot of storage at a good price point. You could RAID O two of them if you want but that's kind of overkill.

Thing is you can set up a comparable system based on the E2180 for less cash...

Yea been in this area for about 25 years.

Would you like a AM2 MB or AM2+ so you can upgrade to Tri or Quad later?
AM2 would be probably about a $100 cheaper.

erm...but why should he spend more money for a gfx card that gives slightly less performance than his current 8800gt? I'd love to have a 3870 myself, but if I had a 8800gt already, it would be a side-step at best.

I like all the other suggestions except the 850w PSU is overkill based on current specs (though for upgrading in the future, it might be a good thing to have). I like Antec PSU's (mine have always been very durable), but I would also agree with the people that say Antec is also overrated.

@ OP: But to be quite honest, why dump $1200 into an AMD build at the moment? I loved my previous system, S939 4400+ X2, so don't mistake me for an intel or AMD fanboy--but you can build a very fast intel rig for $1200 if you don't need to buy a new gfx card, and it will kick the crap out of the AMD build--just the way things are at the moment. Do you have any strong feelings that you must stay with AMD for now? Because if you want the best performance, you'll probably want to go intel C2D build. Just my $0.02...
