Default New AMD Build (Dual-Core or Quad?)

Hey guys got about 800 here to basically get a tower built for my buddy. He already has a monitor, speakers and all that. We've been looking at the BE 5000+ or possibly one of the quad cores. Gonna use around 100 of that cash to get a decent video card, another 100 or so for a 500gb hdd, and another 100 on the g.skill ddr2 800. So now we have about 500 for heatsink/fan, mobo, cpu. Just looking for a great and super fast combo. Thanks

Also needing a wireless card for this comp since he doesn't wanna run a crap load of wires through his house

I recommend dual core since most games aren't quad core optimized... unless your friend does some heavy 3D rendering or video encoding then go quad.

Rig configuration:

Total= $806.89

Will he be using this for gaming? You might want to consider spending more on the video card if he is.

You said $100 for the G.Skill memory, so I assume you're looking at the 2x2GB kits? Does he already have a 64-bit version of Windows, because the common 32-bit version won't recognize more than about 3.4GB of memory.

If you really want to spend just $100 on the video card, then you might want to consider a 7900GT that I'll be selling in about 2 weeks for $90 shipped It will perform better in video games than an 8600GT which is about the best you can get for under $100. If he's willing to spend a little more on the card, he can get an 8800GS for about $120, or a 9600GT for $145 after $30 MIR.

And of course the most important question, will you be overclocking? (nod your head yes or be shunned lol)

EDIT: Ooooo, the earthwatts 500W is on sale again for $65 and free shipping , I've been waiting weeks! Good spot SZayat. Now I just need to find a use for this second rig I'm slowly accumulating lol.

I agree--take some money from the mobo/cpu/case and put it towards the video card--if you're honestly going to game, $100 won't go far on newer games. But if you're not going to game (don't want to assume), then a $100 card is fine. I'd say don't spend money on more than a dual-core right now--just 'cause tri's and quads are out, doesn't mean they're necessary.

Let us know more specifically what the this rig is going to be used for, and maybe we can make better recommendations. Like gaming vs. web surfing, video encoding vs. HTPC, etc.

I totally agree with your rig--it would kick the crap out of any comparably priced AMD rig (especially for gaming--8800gt FTW!), but I've found that posting an Intel build in the AMD section only gets you (a) ignored (first-hand experience), or (b) flamed... But I would totally go with your suggestion over a 5000+BE

I have no problems with AMD and actually built a X2 3600+ for a budget build after I bought my Intel E6400, however since the release of the E2xx0 series of allendales Intel dominates price/performance

Yep, hence my sig rig! Haha, lol.

@ OP--I'd really suggest going with more than a $100 card, and also don't skimp on the motherboard quality--I've reallllllly been sold on buying quality motherboards--I owned two ECS motherboards and one ASRock motherboard, and they had nothing but stability problems. Used my gigabyte board, and have had no stability issues... Just my $0.02...

I was looking at doing an intel build also. Either way he said he doesn't game much just ever slightly and it isn't any new games like cod4 that take alot of power to run. Yes i plan on running the 32bit windows so i guess i wont need 4gb of memory then. So i guess i'll be using a 2x1gb kit.
