Talking Starting my Second AMD build...

This one has been along time coming, but after doing a n00b thing earlier I'll have to go and start me another build.

See today for me was MONTHLY MAINTENCE day for the Media\TS\gaming\whatever it can host, server day. Being it was an old P4 Craptel (Intel) it was lucky to be doing what it was doing and very slow at doing it also. Well for some reason I decided today I would put the heatsink\fan on after I got the board in (I KNOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY IT). Well I got destracted and came back and thought I was ready to power up, (finger goes into slow-mo while I push in the power button). YUP that's right started up my old P4 without a heatsink on it at all. When booted it beeped at me trying to warn me and it was already too late. "Did someone turn the heater on?" I asked my girlfriend..... Then I look in the case...no you n00b that's just your p4 frying.

So now I'm where I was a couple of days ago when I was asking some of you about upgrading to a AMD 6000 or better processor. I figure the pc in my sig will take over my server hosting, and make the new build my machine. I've already put all my drives over from my old P4 into (well not into cus it won't all fit) and got all my major stuff back up.

I guess I'm going to get a differnet case tho for my gaming pc, maybe go watercooling, altho I've had great results with air on my pc in my sig. The case the old P4 was in is a recycle and was a propritary case, I made it work tho. I'll reuse some stuff but most of the stuf I can reuse is IDE as you can already guess, and I'll go all Sata for my build, guess I can throw some of the IDE stuff on this one and move some of my Sata over to the new rig.

Anywho..this I guess is what I have to look for....

Processor AMDx2 6000 or better
Mobo Asus M2N32-Sli or equivalant
ram DDR2 800mhz (guess this is right, been in the 939 erra for a while)
power Something around 700w that's SLI compatable
case Prolly buy a Cheapy to mod for air or water cooling

I've got a 7600GT card to put in this rig so I can use the 8800GTS in the new rig. So I think I got all bases covered....Now I just need to find the stuff and find it for CHEAP!!! I'm not wanting to drop more than 3 or 4 bills (less if I can get by with it) on all this stuff, (that can be done right????) so if you might have some stuff laying around gathering more dust than it's worth and feel the need to get rid of it for a lil money PM me PLEASE!!!! I live in KY, so if you live around here maybe I can arrange a pickup. I'll be browsing the mods area cus I need some Ideas even tho my brain is overflowing with some right now...... Guess I'll put some pics etc up of my current pc when I built and modded it, and guess I'll do a build log for the new one.

Thanks

and laterz

The cpu is nice. They dont Oc that far but they are nice. I was able to trade my 6000+ to a friend on OCN for my Phenom 9600
I think the M2n32 will support phenom as well. I would Tell you that the ASUS_M2N SLI DELUXE 570 is an amazing board I have one. "IN RMA " at the moment because OF my installation of a bad bios. BUt other than that They are great. I too came from 939 before my am2 setup and man you will see a great boost. PS you buidl should be great. I wanna watch this!

You need any help and want to see a similar build I have my build log Here

Kewl sublime0 I actually was reading your build log before I started this thread, and love the STRESS-O-Meter......guess I'll have to do something similar (unless you take copyrights on it..LOL) Yeah...I'm a DFI fan boy really, I've had an Asus board in the past, and also a Abit (burn in hell) board also. DFI's are atleast it seems for me, getting harder to come by, and if you find one it's an ungodly price. And I know I want a sli board, and it seems like DFI is pretty much just making AMD+ATI boards and that's about it, sure I could go with an older board like what my buddy has, but it has no SLI. And being that the 8800gts' are getting cheaper and cheaper...I would love to have two in SLI especially if I can get the other one to overclock like this one has.

Anyway...I'll keep ya informed and prolly I'll be in touch in PM's, this build will take a while being I'm trying to get a job rolling too....been outta work for over a year, and frankly I'm tired of being at the house....LOL

After looking at pricing etc.... I'm almost tempted to do an (you can pretend I didn't say this) INTEL build. Seems like a Q6600 would be a great build, but I'm still throwing my arms up in the air so far, I still gotta find me an old beater case from somebody's trash etc, so I can start on my case for the case mod comp.

There's always going to be a fence inbetween the two camps, one saying do an AMD build and the other saying do an Intel build....sad thing is that my buddy back around Christmas bought a quad core intel, and it had problems keeping up with mine, doing regular tasks in windows, installs, but I think I might have had me in some games like Company of Heros etc.

I dunno.....I've been sitting at this crossroad for a while...and I'm ready to make a decision, cus there's not much time on the case mod comp, and well I gotta get a server going, it sucks not being able to reboot cus your hosting ****...LOL

laterz....

It is just a preference at this point. Let's face it, for day to day computing and gaming either processor is going to meet all of your needs. If the price point is there, I say go with AMD, but since you can get a Q6600 at Fry's Electronics for $190, it is hard to justify spending another $46 for a Phenom 9850 that is inferior. It is a tough decision, but for me it comes down to obtaining the best performance for the lowest price, and you can achieve both of those with an Intel build.

If you were to re-think whether or not you want to go quad, and resolve back to a dual core system, then that is a new ballgame. I think the idea of a quad core is nice, but I for the life of me can not see how I could effectively utilize a quad core, short of having a dedicated folding rig. If I were going to build right now it would be an AMD with the Brisbane 5000+.

Hmmm.....seen where some these hit over 3.5ghz VERY VERY tempting.... anyone you know of have experience with one of these....this would deffinately put me back in my oringal price range. Plus I'm thinking going to Water Cooling, so this would be very achivable.

SO MANY GOOD CHOICES!!!

Well how about this......

I'll get this PROCESSOR
this MOTHERBOARD

and if someone can recommend some ram for this I'll prolly run up to 4gig of ram, and I've see alot of people perfer Cosair PSU's, so something like one of thoes around 700w or so, cus I'll get another 8800GTS to pair with the one I already have, that should have me set!

PLEASE give any advice on either of these products....

I found this ram think I will get 4gb of it....anyone know of any issues with it and working in the above mentioned motherboard? My current DFI board didn't like OCZ ram at all....

Thanks!

I have no experience with the nVidia 590 SLI chipset, but it seems that people have gotten some impressive overclocks with them. I am not too keen on the idea of a open box motherboard though, but to each there own. The nVidia 570 chipset is decent too, but both have been around for a while, which could be a positive or negative. As far as memory compatibility you might want to check out the DIY Forum, this is a collaboration of all motherboards, but DFI still reigns king as this is the predecessor to the DFI forum. Search around for the board you are considering and I bet there is some info about compatibility. If not, I am sure that someone will be able to answer your question, or search the DFI website for a list of compatible memory.

I am intrigued by the AMD 770 chipset myself. It looks like an overclocking friendly chipset with a budget oriented price tag. You can get a Gigabyte for $85 shipped from the Egg, but SLI is nothing I am considering or am in interested in. Double the price for 20% increase in performance does not make any sense to me, call me crazy.

I would definitely consider getting a DFI board though, big fan here. The AMD 790FX is on a DFI model too, and seems to be a great board. New for $170, and open box for $120, and if you were considering CrossFire, then it would be a good option.
