I'd also go with a Core 2 Duo, they will run cooler and also use less power. Also a Core 2 Duo at 2.6 Ghz is like an Athlon at 3.25 Ghz.

Forgot to add that with a BE, you need your own cooling. IMHO, this is one of the best AM2 coolers out there: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835887011

& http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128059 For the processor and mobo. It's relatively the same price as the Athlon X2 6400+ and the Asus mobo, but you see a whole lot better performance. You'll also see less heat and less power consumption.

I noticed two hard drives, but a motherboard that does not support RAID. You're probably just using one as storage but just wanted to make sure you're aware that the DS3L will not do RAID.
__________________Is this rig being overclocked? If not I see no need for the CM 690. Plenty of $35-50 cases will work just fine, and there's lots that are still attractive like the CM 690. Try a CM Elite 330 or a CM Centurion 5. What is this rig being used for? I know Linux, but what is he doing with Linux, basic office stuff? It seems to me that there's a lot of overkill in this rig. Does he really need a $200 E8400 meant for hard core gamers? He definitely doesn't need 650W of power, a 430, 450 or at most a 500W will be much more affordable and provide plenty of power. Try an Antec earthwatts or a Corsair VX series for dependability and afforability. You could also save $10-30 with a cheaper motherboard. Also, does he really need 640GB of storage? A 160GB or 250GB drive is plenty for most people.

Yes it does. I use lightscribe on my Linux install all the time. And it's GUI. Even though I don't use Ubuntu, I am sure the Ubuntu guys have the lightscribe software in their repos.

To the original poster: Don't listen to the advice in regard to Linux in this thread: most of the folks that have posted don't know what they're talking about. Treat your build just like you would if you were building a Windows box. The only thing I agree with is the guy who said stick with nVidia graphics cards -- he is right, nVidia seems to be more on the ball with their Linux drivers than ATI does.

Go with a Q6600 still. Everything else seems fine.
With that mobo you should hit 3ghz easy with a good cooler (true or tuniq). If you want to stay with the e8400 which is still a superb choice, then continue to get a better graphics card such as an 8800gt. Native linux games run pretty well but some thru wine arents all perfect and willneed tweaking. Oh, and a tip. When installing GPU drivers in the future if using Buntu google Envy. If you (somehow) fail to get that working try sudo killall gdm I think it was. Youll need to ctrl-alt-backspace or init 3 first though.

With great difficulty

This is linux, so I'd say focus on CPU/RAM rather than GPU. Go for a quad and maybe a cheap 4GB kit. Compiz needs almost no horsepower to run, and linux won't do much that is more graphically demanding
