My uncle wishes me to build him a PC to use Linux (assuming Ubantu)on. Would this be a good sub-$1000 build?

IDE drive is bad. Also, 3870 is overkill... you can buy a cheaper GPU. Most Linux games don't have very demanding graphics.

I think he has. He's going to be in town on Friday and will give me more details then on what he wants exactly.

IMHO, go with an nVidia card. ATI's Linux support is dismal at best.

Don't get a light scribe DVD drive, I don't think linux supports it.
And get a 5000BE and overclock it. There is no need to get a 6400. Also, I'm not trying to be a fan boy, but it may be cheaper to go with intel for this one.

Well I updated it a bit. Is the 8800GS decent enough?

It may be to much.
If you can find a deal on an 8600GTS, go for it. Linux is hardly demanding. Unless it's going to be a dual boot machine. I saw the updated wish list, and I'm not trying ot be like the people that scream, "GO INTEL!!!111" But an E2220 with a Gigabyte EP31 DS3L is $164. That can save you some money and is more energy efficient. One more thing. Unless thats the case your uncle wants. Get one of the cheaper Rosewills. I've had great luck with them. If you don't want the intel road, then you have yourself a pretty solid setup. I'll add another edit: If you change your motherboard to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135075 Then you'll be getting a much better deal.

Even an 8600GT will do.
