Question new amd build...opinions wanted

Hey there OCN. Time to upgrade my system and Im looking comments/tips/potential problems.

Im looking at these parts:

Mobo: MSI K9A2 Platinum 790FX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130136

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 800MHz...cant decide between 4x1Gb or 2x2Gb. Which is a better choice?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148183
or
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...CCODE=WEM1610V

Vid Card: ATI 3870 512Mb...i think i might just wait for the 4870 to come out.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121233
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127315

HDD: Im going to get rid of my 120Gb and switch it for a 36Gb WD Raptor.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136054
I was reading somewhere that this 10000 rpm drive is actually slower than some 7200 rpm drives due to the multi-platter construction. Any thoughts on this?

Everything else in my sig i am going to keep, but will i have to get a sound card or does the mobo have onboard sound?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The motherboard has onboard sound, a sound card is a personal preference. It will take stress off the CPU, and will improve the sound quality of everything.

As for the ram I would get the 2x2gb kit. This kit will allow you to have future upgrading space for more ram.

I would either get a 880GTS (G92) or hold off until the 4870 comes out. However, the 4870 will be pricey when it first comes out, so keep that in mind.

Lastly, I would just keep what you have. Those drives you have in RAID 0 are going to be hard to beat in the speed department.

DO NOT FORGET!!

If you are going to be getting a 4GB kit of ram, you must have a 64bit version of windows, whether it be Vista or XP.

2x2 Gb set is easier to overclock and i would wait till the new amd cards come out unless you're in a huge hurry.

Why not switch over to intel during this upgrade, then use the others as a secondary rig.

The majority of my sig rig is going to my girlfriend. And Ive never been a fan of Intel...just a personal choice to stick with AMD.

Im just getting the 36Gb Raptor for a systems HDD. Everything else is on my raid set-up.

Also, thank you for bringing up 64 bit windows. I had a question on that. I want to get Vista home basic x64 when i upgrade. I went to the Microsoft website to check out prices and found this page http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/co...Id=396&tabid=1

I followed the directions to check if i did have a 64bit processor (knowing the whole time i do) but was really surprised to see that the PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE variable said x86. Could this be due to my current MB?

if you have the dough, id go for a 150gb raptor. on hd performance tests, the raptor easily outperforms a 7200 rpm hd in read and write speed. with only 36 gb, youre gonna run out of space quick.
