Currently AMD CPUs do not limit single cards for folding, and that's my Athlon X2, so I don't think a quadcore Phenom would limit it any for other things.

Besides, AMD is the only side that offers quadruple slot PCI-E with space for dual-slot cards. Phenom didn't limit the Belgians who ran this setup with four 9800GX2s. That's 8 GPUs running CUDA code, it was still blisteringly fast.

Understandable but I still like XFX. They have nice art, run well, and have a cool doorknob sign. Since I can't afford to keep up with the bleeding edge, the warranty is a good selling point for me in the long run. That in itself may prove to pay off in the future.

I would get a quad. What if you want to expand to four cards later? You need one core for each GPU.

Get an 680i or x38 motherboard with three x16 PCIe slots. You would be able to run 3 dual-slot cards instead of just two.

there's also the 680a... which everyone seems to treat like a second-rate unborn fetus. (ok so maybe thats a little extreme)

You mean people are smothering 680a motherboards in BBQ sauce before devouring them whole?

680a? 4x4? AMD dropped 4x4 over a year ago... it was such a waste of money for NVIDIA.

waste of money for NVIDIA != waste of money for OP

not the best choice, but it seems silly to recommend intel chipsets to him, when he's stated that he is settled on AMD

BIOSTAR TForce TF570SLI $50
8GB OCZ ram $160 (bought 2gb sticks for $40)

WILL GET
2 9800GX2's. which brand? i was thinking PNY, or eVGA

4 raptors in RAID10 sounds good. any good deals on raptors, or just newegg?

MAJOR EDIT: CPU power is INSIGNIFICANT WITH A BUILD LIKE THIS SO DON'T FLAME FOR NOT GOING INTEL I only plan to oc to 3GHz just 'cause
Are you planning to mod the case too or just keeping it stock?

Since he is planning to stay stock, I doubt he would do case mods (unless it's for more fans because you need better airflow). Those GX2's run hot.
