Talking DIY Affair - Elegant case Performance with Bling

I'm starting this thread to document my AMD computer build. I'm building a case too, totally DIY. I'll be putting that part in the Overclock.net Case building forum. Will update with link when I get to that part next week.

A little about myself.
My name is David. I'm a young white yuppie in riding around good ole' Penn's Woods.

My first computer was an IBM Turbo XT (8088) The Sears rep gave my parents the shaft when he said this here computer will last forever. He'll be using it to well into college... LOL a couple of month later they found out this computer was last years model and they were trying to get rid of them for the new IBM AT.

My computer came with a 360KB double-sided 5 1/4" full-height floppy disk drive, a 20MB Seagate ST-412 hard drive, an Asynchronous Adapter (serial card) and a 130W PSU. The motherboard had eight 8-bit ISA expansion slots, and an Intel 8088 microprocessor running at 4.77 MHz. Turbo mode was good for an extra 5MHz. (Does pushing a factory installed button count towards OCing? ) The operating system was PC-DOS 2.0 & had a whole 640kB on the motherboard (two banks of 256kb chips, two banks of 64kB). Thanks Bill Gates. The EGA monitor has caused me many optometrist visits.

From there I built all my computers and my family's.
486-66MHz
Pentium75 OCed to 90
Pentium100 OCed to 120
AMD 586 400MHz
AMD XP tbird I forget speed but was OCed too. My parent thought OCing would melt the monitor or burn down the house.
AMD barton 2600+ OCed to 2.2GHz

So that's my computer life. 4.67MHz to 2.2GHz. Let's see what we can do today.

What have we here? Lots of boxes of magic smoke Apparently different vendors carry different colors.

I opened up all the boxes and WTH!, they messed up the order.

Strange computer shapes they have nowadays....

J/K Underneath that was the drool inducing stuff.

Oh sorry... They do that to me sometimes.

So yeah... I need to build my case. But my dad has my rivet gun and is on vacation for the next week. It was so good of him to tell me this along with the fact that they changed the locks on the house and I'll get the key when they get back... ARGH!

So until then. The errr... required feet pic.

It's amazing how a whole computer can fit in a box. This one is special from frozencpu.
Well except the PSU and MB. The PSU is freakin' heavy man. I'm telling yeah. Must be the heatpipes.

David

P.S. If you think this thread is lame... Did I happen to mention I'm building the worlds first hover computer?

Think it lame now, huh? I didn't think so!

Well here's my work in progress. Putzing around with it since last September. Hasn't really picked up speed till the case was done which was last week. Then all the pieces get installed. (now) I had this idea right around the time Langer first posted his intial PrometheusCU at XS.org.
I was upset (I got over it) cause I was like that ****er stole my idea.
So I was like copper smopper, I'm going to do it in gold and brass. So that's what I set out to do.

Working on the case now.
Mcmaster-Carr is next in line to Jesus. Thank you Mcmaster, I love you.

So overkill, yep Rivet overkill. I went with the most beefy rivets around.

These babies are aluminum rivets with a steel mandrel. Good for over 1/2 ton of shear and tensile stress.

Here's the rivets for the frame.

Putting the Frame together

Finishing it up. Yea for CUBES.

By the way, most of the aluminum is from Mcmaster too.
I used Grade 5083 High Strength Super Corrosion Resistant for the frame and 5086 grade regular strength super corrosion resistance for the sheet metal. Top and bottom piecess of the frame was made up of 1/8" Square tube and U-channel, which was alternated. Side framing was 1/8" L-channel. Side pieces were riveted with flush mouthing aluminum/steel rivets.

Missing some intermediate pictures. (Will post them later from other computer)

Here's the finished case with motherboard tray and rad/PSU holes cutout
BTW, all this was done by hand. I basically used a hand drill, recipricating handsaw, and a with a bit of dremel thrown in. Oh and a double side file. Wow a stupid file and yet I couldn't live with out it. It allowed me to NOT slash my wrists(or any other tender parts) on sharp edges. \
I did manage to cut myself but not as bad as my 18 month old. We still don't know how she did it. BUt yes she was playing happily, smearing red blood all over my case. Decorating it for her daddy I suppose.

Anyways...

Added two bottom strips for bracing.

****ed up the rad cutouts. I used paper and markers to do it and I got it mostly right. But the perfetionist in me is PISSED.
If I did it again I know how'd I'd do it. Funny, at the time you think one way is fine, but after you screw up, it's like Ohhh should have done it THIS way instead of THAT way.

Here I got my scythes S-Flex SFF21G's in, Primochill LRT, and some bitspower compression goodness.
Damn, expensive ****. Better last me 20 years.... and no I'm NOT kidding.

Putting fans on BIX480's. Fans on and wires chained together. With grey vinyl stripping from LOWES.

Rads installed

I took out three screws from the PSU (The 4th one I couldn't as it would void the warrenty) Flipped PSU over and screwed down tight to bottom, using longer M3 screws from LOWES.
All threaded rods, nuts, washers, and screws you see (and don't) are brass.

So this is where I'm at now. Installing PSU, Meanwell unit, Iwaki placeholder, and other related stuff.

So PSU under MB tray, and Iwaki and Meanwell on the other end, like this...
And this is where you can help me. I'm running ideas in my head about item placement and well I'd like your input.

The case is 26"x24"x24" (LxWxH). I have a EK 400mL res that's 16" long.
I want to have an 12 3.5" drive cage in there (8HDDs and 4SDDs, room for ~4 5.25" bays. (2 DVD drive, an Aquaero, and a LCD screen.

I might put one more brace adjancent to the other one, across from the MB tray. I plan on using those to braces as places to mount stuff too. ie, res, HDD cage, and 5.25 dvd panel.

So what do you guys think. Any ideas on how to organize remaining space?

GO Red Team Dragon.

Heh, I had that same problem.

Hovering computer huh? Ambitious. But what about the computer will hover exactly, I mean those fans won't even lift themselves much less anything it's attached to. Now if you're going for a baffle of sorts (like a hovercraft) they might be able to put enough air in there....maybe.

Looking forward to it though man, can't wait to see it!

PS - what with the braided tubing?
