Thanks for the video you included. It was actually very helpful to a noob who wasn't quite sure what lapping was. LOL Not sure, if I am up to it yet but at least I have an honest idea of what would be involved.

What's the point of the nickel plating if it transfers heat so much worse? I know flattening the surface is one of the main reasons to lap, but, there's no adverse effects of the copper being exposed or anything?

Well the copper can become discolored and age a bit so it will look ugly. Actually if you have TIM on it and a heatsink it wont. I assume the manufacturer use nickel plating because its more durable and easy to print on. The copper will tarnish and make it hard to see eventually.

there's cpu and it's copper layer, and then nickel layer and paste and then cooler nickel layer and cooler's cooper layer and finally a fan to draw it away

i believe less material count transfer faster? and maybe more pure
