Are you open to go to Intel? If not wait until the Phenom II's turn out/ advance a little.

I'm sticking with AMD/ATI for now, and I fear that I might end up getting screwed for it. I'm giving my current rig to a family member in January, so I'm building for that. I wouldn't pitch for a Phenom II in any case, but I'd be glad to take advantage of generational savings on Phenom cores. a 9950/9850 BE for <150 would tickle me pink....

anyone selling?

To be honest, the setup you're thinking of doing is pretty good. Mine is very similar (see setup) and I've been happy as hell with it. Don't let Intel boys scare you, the Phenom 9850 is a solid processor and its performanceverclock ratio is very good (ie: you get good performance boosts with relatively low overclocks). The 790GX is a good board, but expect it to run pretty warm (mine runs idle at about 40C), but a lot of people have experienced this also.

I'm no fan of CPU's this is only my third Intel chip before that it was all AMD, from a K6 to a FX62.
If anything I'd be more scared if someone tells you about how good a AMD chip and avoid Intel at the moment.
Just a thought

Anyways I just nabbed a 9850 BE on ebay... $145.09 shipped. I could list a dozen reasons for sticking with AMD... but when it comes down to it I just want the chip from the least Orwellian-sounding company with the coolest color scheme.

Face it. Intel sounds like the company that's gonna put our brains into robots and start a frikkin' war. I can't support that.

First off i gotta ask ya, where did u find a 4870 for $180, that is a friggin sweet deal. Anyways, both the foxconn 790GX and Biostar 790GX boards r good and will provide u with decent overclocks. If ur gonna spend $135 on a power supply, go with a corsair. Awesome power supplies.

ASUS HD 4870 $180 after MIR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121276

Folks are complaining that the fan craps out instantly, doesn't bother me since I plan on replacing the HS with my HR-03GT + fan before I ever power it on.

Complaints about the PCB being non-ATI reference, though, catch my attention. A little more research in perhaps warranted.

I have a Corsair HX520W right now, but I read that the TX lines were lower quality. The HIPER got a thumbs-up from Tomshardware, performing similarly to the awesome HX520, and also has that spiffy USB charger feature. I'm gonna stick with the HIPER unless I find a killer deal on an HX680.
