Default Unboxing: Foxconn A79A-S, Gigabyte HD 4870, Corsair HX620W *56K Rape*

Edit: I added a lot more to the Foxconn A79A-S, and finished the Corsair unboxing. Check it out for more box shots and details of the board itself..

So, most of my new build came in today and I thought I'd take some pictures of everything for you guys. I know how geeks get off on stuff like this and I couldn't think of a bigger collection of geeks on the civilized web.

Merry Christmas.

Here's everything I got in the mail today.

And here's the big box it came in. Toes provided for scale.

I'll start with the 4870. If someone could fill me in on posting thumbnails, I'll post some high-res images of the board that way.

The box was bigger than I expected and very shiny. The busty lady on the front gives you an idea of what's inside: An advanced piece of computer technology capable of trillions of complex calculations per second.

The back. If you seriously need to read the back of the box to make your GPU-buying decision, you shouldn't be reading this.

My Gigabyte HD4870 came with this laser mouse. It looks pretty nice, but I don't need it. I'll probably sell it here when I get enough reps. I wish they had packed in a cool game

The inner box is either "menacing" or "boring", I can't decide. It's made of sturdy, glossy cardboard.

Internal packaging. The card fits snugly underneath a thin peice of foam. Pretty standard. The accessory box holds a crossfire bridge, two DVI->VGA dongles, a component->Svideo dongle, and a neat little Y-cable... that's about it. Nothing too fancy.

The little Y cable makes a 6-pin connector out of two molex's. I've never seen anything like this before and thought it was a pretty neat addition, in case your PSU doesn't have another connector for Xfire.

The front of the card. Twirling the fan gives a neat feeling of well-oiled ball bearings. I was surprised at how heavy this was. My old X1950XT weighed about 1/4 as much. On the end you can see 2x 6pin power connectors.

The back of the card. The Crossfire port, both DVI ports and the SVideo port are plugged with little rubber things. Cool, I guess.

Default Foxconn A79A-S Unboxing

Moving on the the Foxconn A79A-S, with SB750+790FX. Woohoo!

__________________________________________________ __________________________________
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Check out this box, it's got a really weird design with people partying on various mobo components. Apparently, Foxconn wants you to associate their $160 motherboard with lounging about and listening to music. I have other ideas for it.

Frankly, it's a nice departure from standard fare women, aliens, or mud trucks that you usually find on performance PC gear. I like the guy with the afro, dancing in front of a 24-pin connector. Party, dude!

The front of the box opens up to reveal some information about the board. To be honest, I didn't realize there was a clamshell when I first checked it out. It took some force to get open, those little velcro dots are really high quality and hold the flap down quite tightly.

The back of the box has a pretty normal diagram pointing to all the board's features. It's got something called "Ferrite Choke", which I think sounds funny. Also highlighted: Integrated Dolby Surround Sound, Gigabit LAN, and 2x eSATA jacks. Sweet!

It's worth noting that this box is extremely portable. I was blown away by the portability of this box. The integrated low-profile handle is strong and easy to grip, providing a balanced carry-point for the box and making it very difficult to accidentally drop. If you ever needed to pick up this motherboard and GO, it'd be a simple matter of tearing all your other components off of it, putting it back in the original box, grabbing this little handle, and going.

The handle is on the plain inner box, so you don't even have to search around for the outer packaging before you leave.

I think Nintendo had a similar idea with the GameCube.

The handle really spices up the inner box.

ChrisB17's review of this board complained that the board didn't come packed in anti-static wrap. I was pleased to find that mine did. There's some thin pink foam underneath the board to protect it, but nothing above it. It fits reasonably snug.

The board sits in a separate little box above the accessories box. It was a really easy package to handle.

Here's the full board. The 24-pin connector is located at the edge to make cable management simple, and there's a massive heatsink on the CPU MOSFETs. The northbridge shares some of that cooling brunt with a connecting heatpipe. I tried to wiggle the heatsink and couldn't, it's pretty secure.

The northbridge has got a decorative Foxconn badge to make it a pain to dust.

The SB750, in all its glory. Check out the copper AID.

I thought the PCI-E retainer clips were noteworthy. They ought to be easier to work with than the standard clip-in-slot design, but I've yet to see how well they actually hold your cards.

The back of the A79A-S, if you're into that sort of thing.

Included accessories. Yay! SATA cables! My old Biostar TForce 550 SE did not include any SATA cables, but the Foxconn comes with... uhhh.. count 'em. Six.

There's also 2x IDE cables, a USB backplate with a mini-USB peripheral port, and 6x molex power connectors.

I dig the color-coded back plate with an easy-to-read serial number.

Default Corsair HX620W Unboxing

The front of the box. It's the same medium-thickness glossy cardboard every other computer part you've ever seen comes packed in.

The back of the box has all the information you'd expect to find. 50A across the 12V rails, 80% efficiency, modular cabling, 6 bazillion awards and accreditation's, not compatible with your mother-in-law, condom not included.

The inside is pretty efficient. There's a power cable, a neat little velcro-sealed bag with all the cables, and a fat hunk of sturdy foam. Nothing budges in here. That is one well-packed PSU.

The top peice of foam weighs a few ounces, it's pretty hefty. Removing it reveals the PSU itself. Also, there were some black screws in tucked away in there in a little gram baggy.

Corsair was thoughtful enough to include this little baggy of black cable-ties, along with a case badge.

The back of the HX620W. Or the front. I admit I don't really know which end of a PSU is the front. It looks nice with a semi-gloss black finish and bold red labels.

The HX620W is not completely modular. There's a 4-pin and a 6-pin connector chilling with the 24-pin main power that cannot be detached. I'm sure I'll find some place to stick them.

All the included cables. There are two SATA chains, a bunch of IDE connectors, two 6-pin connectors, a floppy connector, and this thing...

It's some kind of retarded molex connector. It's labeled "Fan only", so I guess it's a fan connector. I bet the other cables make fun of it.

The guys at Corsair did a lot better packing the unit than I did. The little bag that all the cables come packed in is just the right size for all of them and it took some shuffling to get everything back in. I felt kind of bad repacking everything, 'cause I know all the cables are gonna kick the crap out of that goofy molex until I put everything together. I don't see why a normal molex connector wouldn't work just fine, if you ran out of fan connectors.

Yeah. That is a pretty funky box design. I don't know what they're trying to get across with the guy lying on the heatsink. If anything, I'm reminded of the iMobo (tm).

Ja. I saw your review before my board came in and I was a little worried. On the other hand, It's a pain in the butt to put the boards back into those bags, so if mine had come without I might have been bothered to handle it a little more and put up some sharper pics.

Damn you Foxconn! Damn you and your protective packaging!

I'm jealous. That bag is actually a thin anti-static plastic, though, not just a plain old plastic bag.

I am stoked for all the goodies Foxconn included. It's a pain in the ass to have to buy a separate SATA cable when you get an OEM drive. Shipping is 3x the cost of the cable!

You wouldn't happen to know what the big black double-cable thing is in there, would you? I actually just noticed it as I was looking over these posts. :S
