Yes, it's more than likely designed on Ubuntu, as it's the most used Distro out there.

Since you seem like you're in college, see if you have a MSDNAA program, we do at even my small community college, and you can get almost all versions of OSes free from Microsoft, you have to provide a CD and burner of course, but it's free.

As for parts reqs:

OS you SHOULD get free from your college.
If not, you can use Ubuntu and join the open source revolution!
Most steam games work on Ubuntu under WINE, and a lot of ID/Quake/UT games work natively in Linux using the provided installers.

Don't worry about the PS. You won't use more than 300 watts, and with such a good Seasonic brand PS you don't have to worry. A cheesy 500w power supply provides about the same amount of power. It's best to look at the specs, specifically the 5.5v and 12 rails.

I asked my computer technology professor about this same thing about a month ago, and he said we can't get any OS for free except linux.

Pretty much anyone with a .edu e-mail can get Vista 64 ultimate for about $60 -just google microsoft ultimate steal. Even so, windows 7 is pretty sweet and currently free. Might as well run that for now imho.

I'd go 2gb of ram. I find I'm very often over a gb and my old 1gb system ran slow if I had enough stuff open to get close to or go over 1gb.

good luck!

In any case, you should order the build and play with Ubuntu. If you like it, cool. If you don't then install Win7 and go from there

I'd also recommend you get another 1gb stick if you plan on running Windows, it shouldn't cost more than $20.
