So my friend Michael has a 2.7GHz Celeron, 512Mb Ram, GeForce FX 5200. Yeah... I know. So I need to build him a decent rig that he can use until he starts college this August.
So here I go for his starter build: Parts I'm giving him that I have in stock: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ ATX Mid Tower Case 1Gb (x2 512Mb) DDR2 800 GeForce 7300GT 512Mb (from my sig) Parts we are using from his rig: 16x DVD Rom Drive DVD-RW Drive Wired Keyboard Optical Mouse 17" CRT Monitor Parts we need to get: HDD: Good SATA hard drive under $50 MOBO: CHEAP AM2 motherboard that supports the 1000MHz H/T 4200+ OS: Some version of 32-bit windows that will work best with this rig PSU: Something to power a 7300GT that won't konk out Budget set at $300 for all of these parts. So, what would be the best choices here?

That is illegal.
EDIT: Also, he is going to work for the FBI, and I am getting a degree in Criminal Justice. We try to uphold the law as much as possible.

Is it now? According to what law? As far as I know, only the person distributing can legally be held accountable. Think of it this way: it wouldn't be illegal for you to be given a stolen cd; it's only illegal for the person to steal it. It is against forum rules to talk about doing such things though.... Myself, I never download copywritten material.

Grab a 780G motherboard and a WD 320GB AAKS drive, it is $55 and if you can spare $5 you can get the 640GB AAKS model, they are some of the fastest single drives besides Raptors on the market
Any PSU will power a 7300GT, they are not performers at all TBH, he might be better off with the integrated GFX on the 780G

Also, depending on when he is going to college or has more money just set him up with the Windows 7 Beta, its good for over 5 more months and would be fine albeit a bit slower on that rig. Also, why not grab another 1GB of ram, it would only cost $10 but be a whole lot better on XP or Vista
