Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this cpu? I've been thinking of buying it.

I don't have any personal experience with it as it's brand spanking new, but so far I've been pleasantly surprised with pII's performance overall from the reveiws I've read. I thought x3's might be a great budget gamer cpu as most games won't need a quad yet, but there are 360 ported games that utilizes upto 3 cores like the 360 cpu. I personally would go with 720(?) Black Edition version of x3 so I can maximize it's oc potential. I wonder if having 1 less core will help with pII overclocking potential.

i saw some benchmarks that these (pII 720) overtook an pII 810 in games. i think its a good CPU to buy but i would wait till some more people have it and have experience with it.

I just finished building a new system with this CPU. I love it!
I have an ASUS DDR3 board and I have gotten the CPU up to 3.4 with the stock fan and heatsink. I got the CPU max so far up to 3.536 with my larger heatsink and fan. I will post my CPU-Z verified results later. This CPU runs very cool and took almost no effort to O/C. Don Last edited by richard8971 : 04-15-09 at 12:31 AM |

For the extra money, get the 720BE. I have a thread to see what the best combos are for the cpu - http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/47...x3-720-oc.html

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think I read somewhere that the 710 and the 720 have the same core, so if you are going to overclock maybe it won't make any difference.

Here is the CPU-Z validation and my post on the World Record Overclock Database. At the time of this posting I am not last and at least I made the list! (I am ranked 12th as of 4/13/09)
Validation:http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=545189 Overclock World Record Database:http://www.ripping.org/database.php?cpuid=936 I have yet to find a CPU that overclocks so easy and runs so cool with stock equipment. I love this CPU. I like Intel, but I have always been an underdog fan. I was able to O/C this chip to 3GHz with stock voltage and stock heatsink and fan. Pretty impressive I think. I figure if AMD keeps this up, they will give Intel a very hard run for thier money! Don Last edited by richard8971 : 04-15-09 at 12:42 AM |

Hey Richard, i'm going to pick up my 710 in an hour or so, i'm also getting the artic cooling freezer 64 pro. Providing my mobo and ram aren't the limiting factor, what overclock do you think I could achieve?

That's an awesome overclock. I just believe that this is a very capable CPU.
One of my theories on this is... when the K62's, early Athlons, P3's that kind of thing... were released, they were pretty much punched out as fast as they could go. You couldn't squeeze much more from them. Now, it seems like the 3GHz wall has been broken for a few years now, but CPU speed has not increased that much sence then. I believe that the CPU's that they are making now are quite capable of much more than what they are branded for. But for the liability, they keep them branded slower than they can achieve. That way if an O/C pushes it and the one out of 100 CPU's that they make fail, they do not have to warranty it. Even the mainboard makers are almost begging you to O/C... Get what I'm saying? 3.5GHz seems to be the sweet spot for these CPU's. I can get to 3.4 on a stock fan and heatsink, pretty cool. My PC flies and I love it. Keep posted if you get it any higher. D
