Upgrade time for stepsons AM2 rig (aged X2 5800).
Have case, 600w psu, Sata DVD, 9600GT, WDD 500 sata hd, keyboard, mouse, & 28" monitor. To use Vista 64 OS (OEM). Rig is mostly used for CS4 video editing, music and more and more into gaming lately. The mobo needs 2x pci slots for wireless adapter card and E-Sata card for external HDD (video files/backup). My thoughts were a Phenom II X4 940 BE mated to a GA-MA790X-UD4 and GSkill 2x2 1066 GBPK for a moderate stable oc that I won't have to babysit 24/7. Can anyone better my plans, and if so, explain. $400. limit (excluding shipping).

Looks good actually.
Personally I'm a memory freak though, so I stuff good memory in every rig that I build. Those G-Skill PI blacks are nice too you know ![]() Which mobo does it have now?

The old Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 mated with a X2 5800 clocked to 3.2.
Major issues with corrupted OS (lack of firewall and anti-virus). Doing a XP repair tomorrow, clean swipe, reusing parts for my daughter antique upgrade from a P4.

Yeah in that case you'd be better off just replacing the board.

It's time for the upgrade because I haven't done a build in a little over a month. It's time anyway. You've obviously never heard a teenage whine about not having a working computer.
Can anyone configure an Intel setup for the same price?

Well you could always get the PII 720 BE and a mobo that will unlock that 4th core best bang for the buck..

An oc'd 720 would have a hard time besting the 940 in video work.
I think I'm mostly looking for a GOOD mobo 780 / 790 and ram.

everything's good.
it's either get a cheaper board so that you can have 8gigs of ram. or wait till the 945be comes out and get ddr3.
