Well, with the new RAM in, and the cooler changed, it is time to put the spurs to her. I ran 235x15 (shows as 234.7x15 = 3520 in Windows) through S&M's FPU test. There is not test that will stress a CPU more. Granted, I am leaving the RAM out of the equation for now, I can see that my temperatures are still safe even if warm. It is interesting to note there is a bit of a Vdroop under load. Idle, I am undervolted 22 mV. Load, I am undervolted 38 mV. I wonder if this will be a problem later. Attached, you will find a picture while S&M is running, and one once it passes.

I tried 240x15 without touching any voltages and it would BSOD on me. So I took a smaller step to 236x15, thereby adding 20 MHz to my overclock.

I picked up 1º C at peak (it generally stayed on a steady 55º C), but I am still within tolerances.

As I said, my NH-C12P has ran warmer than my SI-128, so I figure something must be wrong since it is supposedly better. I pulled it apart, and noticed there is a little more TIM than should usually be there. It looked evenly spread. I thoroughly clean the IHS and the NH-C12P with IPA. I checked that the NH-C12P is in fact flat with a straight edge. I reapply TIM and place the cooler on top of the IHS, and then I thought of something. When I bolted it down the first time, it did not really seem tight as compared to my SI-128. Even before I did the 20¢, the SI-128 was tighter. (Lovingly ripped off from txtmstrjoe's 2¢ mod.)

So I got to thinking: what could I do to make it tighter? The change is not an option given the difference in the mounting bracket. Then I thought, what if the bracket were thicker? So I measure the screws (about 5 mm) and find out that they would fit well inside of an SAE #10 washer (5.5 mm or so). So I run to Home Depot and buy a bag (for $1.07) and put a washer between each spring screw and the bracket, thereby increasing spring pressure. I give it a wiggle; hm... still loose. So I put another one in on either side, and notice it is much harder to bolt down. Good; that is what I want.

So I boot into Windows and fire up S&M FPU. With Arctic Silver 5 that is literally a half-hour out, load temps are just about 49º C. Not bad. I am hoping that as the AS5 cures, it will drop a bit.

I realize now this same technique could have been used on my SI-128 as well. It also would have been much easier to implement than the 20¢ mod given the physics of asking the bracket to bend more than it should.

(Crossposted with the Phenom II overclocking database.)

Blitz, I'm glad you got that figured out

Do you have plans on pushing for a higher OC now?

Good luck

I have to wait until the AS5 settles in a bit. 1-2º C does not help much; in order to stabilize 3.60 GHz I think I need about 4-6º C. Right now, it is still heating season and my apartment runs a fairly steady 18.0 ± 0.3º C. When summer rolls around, and I swing over to the central air, I will be looking at 21.6 ± 0.3º C. I would need my full load temp to be no more than about 57º C I gather such that when the summer comes, I will not overheat in S&M. Accordingly, I am in the market for a new fan to mount on the heatsink.

Well, I just ordered a new fan, and while I was at it, finally got around to ordering the OCZ Freeze Extreme I kept forgetting to order. I will get updates on temperature when they come in.

Well, I have done some tinkering. I am now situated at:

15x230 (id est, 3450 MHz)
DDR2-800 (thereby running at DDR2-920)
10x Northbridge
8x Hypertransport

This yielded the following 3DMark06:

19199

It already passed OCCT's default 1 hour test, maxing out around 49º C. S&M's FPU pushed that up to 54º C.

I am about to run Vantage.

(Validation link at 3450 MHz @ 1.328 V)

Looks Sweet Blitz, Question though I don't use artificial benchmarks anymore so could you give me a baseline on the 3dmarks on the best 939 platform for comparison?

I have the itch to go get an X3 and take my chances on unlocking it but I'm still very happy with my opty. But then again I don't really FPS anymore so...

I think the highest 939 score that I can remember seeing was around 12000 or so, but I bet someone has done better..
Wow, that's a really nice score, blitz! I remember you talking about getting another 4870x2 a while ago, would it really be worth it? This thing seems like a real killer already. Would be fun to see the scores though.

I now am armed with a Vantage score. In Vantage, Dragonier scores P13577

To put that into comparison:

Xaser Brixfire (HD 4870x2 with a Brisbane @ 3.25 GHz) scored P8688 and 12778 respectively. I never ran Vantage on my Toledo. But, 3DMark06 gives me a CPU score of 2300 on a Brisbane @ 3.25 GHz, 2000 on a Toledo @ 2.8 GHz, and 4850 on a Deneb @ 3.45 GHz.

Hope this helps you Hueristic!

Regards x3s: It seems they are hit and miss. Some people can unlock them no issue. Others can unlock them, but they are very less than stable. You may or may not get lucky.

HothBase: 3DMark of any flavor does not show a true system strength. My HD 4870x2 on the Brisbane got 12.7k. My 2x HD 3850 on the Brisbane got 12k. I can tell you, having used both, the 2x HD 3850 could not hold a candle to the HD 4870x2 while gaming. This does not mean I would not want another HD 4870x2; as of now, I can play almost game I want fluidly with the exception of Crysis. While that game is terribly coded, there will definitely be games in the future that will bring my system to its knees, and I want to be ready for them ahead of time.
