Yup it's almost like we are starting over from scratch w/our learning curve. I just figured out how to increase the spd of my cpu spd controlled by PWM value. I'm gonna set the start temp at 25 and max out the PWM value and see if it gets that cpu fan to finally start cooking w/gas...

Edit: that was my problem w/the cpu temp and fan spd. I got it running at the max it will go 2778 full bore wide open and factoy max is 2800+/- 10% I just learned how to use Slope PWM value to have it auto adjust the cpu fan according to temp and spd...

So I am not so upset about buying the fan anymore. With some more tweaking, I will have it exactly where I want it. Right now, it is on its lowest setting and is not substantially louder than the fan it replaced. I would say about 31 dBA instead of 28 dBA. However, it is about 2º C cooler at idle with one fan less. (This is once again ducted directly outside.) When I played Call of Duty 4 last night, it had acted a little strange before settling into a groove. It would max out, idle, max out, idle, max out, idle, until it finally settled somewhere in the middle.

Vista does not require any processor drivers; they are rolled into the core. Northbridge/Southbridge drivers, if required, will install with Catalyst Control Center if you use AMD/ATi. I know you use nVidia/nVidia, so the point is moot for you; but for those of us with Dragon platforms, it is nice to have solely one driver to deal with.

I have not tried my Deneb on an XP platform; my only XP is XP Home, and as such, it would be utterly incapable of handling my hardware. I would likely be only able to use 1.5 GB of my RAM for example.

Some of you may know, that I am completely incapible of folding on my HD 4870x2 unless I downclock the card. Accordingly, I have filed an RMA with Sapphire, so I am going to be without my desktop until I get it back. (I have no other PCIe cards, only AGP.)

In the interim though, I have been doing SMP folding on the Deneb. Right now it is loading at 38º C with the fan still at a tolerable level. Upgrading to a 38mm fan instead of a 25mm fan seems to have been the fix I needed. Well, that, and the OCZ Freeze/extra washer. With the 25mm fan, Arctic Silver 5, and two washers per screw, I had 43º C. A 5º C savings without being substantially louder? I will take it!

In any event, it shines poorly on Noctua's design: why make screws that cannot tightly clasp the heatsink on thereby requiring shimming. I do appreciate its flatness though; every time I remove it, I notice the perfection in the TIM spread.

Blitz, did you test the 4870x2 and F@H with any other Windows versions? (ie. Vista 32-bit, XP 32-bit)?

Good luck

Blitz, I read the thread you included in here and it didn't seem your issue was too common. Wouldn't hurt to see if the cards worked on a different OS other then Vista 64-bit. You could be getting back the same cards with Sapphire saying there was nothing wrong with them. What exactly did you put in the RMA?

I'm just trying to help you rule out software being the problem before you start sending back hardware. If it's a Windows based problem then you might be wasting your time with a RMA.

Good luck

I told Sapphire that at stock clocks, the card cannot fold a unit; keeps telling me unstable machine. The only units that work are when I force the card down to 507/500. Also, the card groans under load.
