Talking Is I7 overkill? help fill in Blanks for New build

[?1]should I go with a AMD phenom2 x3 720 BE and MOBO with on board graphix?

I do a lot of multitasking: web browsing, utorrent, vlc media, musicmatch, pdf ebook, some adobe photoshop and dreamweaver, kaspersky, messenger, word, etc. no video editing or high end games. the only game i want to be able to play right now is civ 4 (video req. 64 MB video card with Hardware T&L support -GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better-) [?2]would any system with an on board graphix MOBO allow this with reasonable speed?)

PURCHASE DATE: ASAP my almost decade old sony viao p4 2.66*depressing sigh* desktop has never satisfied my needs but i've always had a laptop or two.

BUDGET: around $500

for now I would like to reuse my old hard drive a samsung sv8004h 80g(until i can afford a 128g SSD and 1tb hdd), also dvd burner and moniter HPL1750 in 1280x1024, and windows 7 beta maybe vista

I live 5 miles from houston microcenter and will buy from any major online source.

PARTS PREFERENCES: no brand preference I prefer function over aesthetics, my case is almost always hidden, thinking full tower, antec or coolermaster, dont think lian li's in my budget.

OVERCLOCKING: Yes, I can and have tools to fabricate/mod so i'm thinking 5 fans and water cooled in the future

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: maybe, in the future i may play more high end games on a bigger screen for now i like my home theater and ps3 community for online gaming.

still researching options but time to get some answers from a more experienced source. I have reviewed many suggested rigs but hope to get some different opinions or a little more confirmation since i don't need some pieces and have some specific needs/questions

i'm thinking 790gx/gp(asus/gigibyte/mci) ,am3 phenom2 720 BE have seen some for a good price.

I'm looking for a reusable case, i will likely only have 2 or maybe 3 hard drives maybe two disc drives and a floppy, but still like the idea of extra room/air flow in full tower, i have space for one. and of course a quality PSU? I don't mind fan noise too much either.

Thank you for any recommendations

I'm looking forward to having a sig rig to overclock. any advice is very much appreciated!

For the tasks you describe, AMD Phenom IIs would be perfect. Can be had for a very low price, even the mobos are really affordable. As for videocards always stay away from integrated graphics. Just put in a low-end ATI (4830 or something). All of that can be had for well under $500.

Others on this forum can better update you on AMD Phenoms. It's been a while since I've had an AMD myself

the onboard graphix options was my main reason for going with AMD is there a better value with a budget quad core intel for my needs, or would a different AMD MOBO be best?

updated sig with possible rig, still planning on using on board graphix for a temp solution to get things up and running unless someone gives me a reason not too and way to add a gpu for less$.

i like the cooler master case but may downgrade because of price. case, psu, MOBO, cpu, ram from newegg is at $596 right now w/ shipping w/o rebates.

can anyone commet on the MOBO choice i've noticed it's not very popular on here but got a good review here http://www.legitreviews.com/article/953/7/

trying to save money on ram planning on upgrading when i add gpu and cooling for overclocking

would like to bring the price down maybe 650watts is too much and mid tower will be all i need? Not sure yet what i want to do with this build and what i will be able to reuse later.

Not a good question to ask in an AMD area? Of course it is!

It was a trick question... by agreeing that the I7 is overkill you confirm that you think it is better an AMD and concede to its superiority which makes you and inferior representative of AMDs. of course I would have answered NO it is not overkill but the pro's features and benifits of an AMD or are much greater then that of any overbaked Intel.

but maybe the title will get my thread more attention, or maybe i need to rename it and start over to get some advice going
