You could do both, unless the slightly higher decibels bother you. What are your temperatures like right now, idle/load?

I don't trust the brisbane core readings but the mobo temp sensor runs between 35-40 C at idle and 50 C at load.

Yeah I've heard that brisbanes can give wonky readings too. More importantly, what are your video card temps like? And do you have a fan mounted on the side, and any in the front? My front 2 are intake and the rest are exhaust, is this similar to your setup?

Sigh. I cranked the fans on high and I think I did something, because World in Conflict: Soviet Assault stopped working and my fan speeds went a little funny. Putting them back didn't fix whatever software weirdness happened (but my fan speeds all went back to normal), so I'm concerned I may have permanently affected something.

I'm not exactly sure why that would happen. With the specs you listed in the OP, the 525W should have no problem powering that rig with some wattage left over. As I stated before I've had my fans on high from the get-go and have had absolutely no problems with fan speeds or anything like that. Hope it works out for you, good luck..

Im sure if you have 2 scythe ultra kaze 120mm fans in there it would make a world of difference. It amazes me how soon as u took the rig out of the miniatx tower u had an put it in that mid tower how magically things started to work again.

Quantum Reality, I think the moral of this story is if you plan on owning a desktop pc, the case is definitely going to need some fans.

It was the DVD drive.

The cheapo LG IDE drive started throwing 0x80070001 errors when I tried reinstalling Vista, so I googled it and it's related to bad CRCs on install media. Since I know the DVD is good, I swapped with an old Pioneer I haven't used in a couple years (it started throwing weird errors with SimCity 3000 back in '06-ish so I retired it as it's been in use since approx 2001). The install's been going beautifully.

So that's that. I think when I jacked up the fans SOMEthing electrical happened to that drive. It's the only (admittedly hand-waving) explanation I can think of.

... especially an SLI desktop machine. Heh. This thread does show an interesting attempt at proof of concept with a cheap case, but the proof was a little lacking.
