i would say get the tri-core as well, but if you want to save money, go with the kuma, either one would be good for gaming and photo editing.

i went quad-core cause i do a lot of video editing and it has shaved my times in half , but as for photo editing, my p4 did a good job at that

I won't get a dual, because my father isn't going to upgrade in a long time and the 720 is just 5 euro's more than the 710. The motherboard is also AGP so he won't be able to upgrade to an 8500GT.

By the way I heard something about unlocking the 4th core of the 720. Will I be able to do that?

You said he wants to edit some photos. Like .jpeg? You don't need a quad for that, and there goes your entire $200 budget if you do. Plus you need a new mobo for the new cpu, as his old one is outdated and won't support anything new you're considering. Definitely browse the 'Combo deals' section on newegg, for starters.

He does not want to upgrade in a while and maybe he will do some video editing. I really don't know as he seems to start hobbying again.

Yeah a phenom ll x3 should be fine. A phenom x4 will also work. If you get a 710/720 don't expect the 4th core to work. It doesn't work on all motherboards, and even if it's possible on yours, the chances of it working are pretty slim. Keep in mind it was meant to be a trike, not a quad with a disabled core to see who can enable it and who can't

Like someone said, DO NOT GET MAXTOR. They are terrible.

LOL, my father told me to get a maxtor, because he already had one. I suggested a Samsung, but he didn't listen. Let's see if I can convince him.

By the way Newegg doesn't ship to Europe, do they?

Photo editing requires hardly anything on the CPU end. You'll benefit more from having 4GB memory instead of 2GB rather than having a tri or quad vs single core processor. And unless he's using CS4, I don't believe any photo editing software takes advantage of more than one core anyhow.

However, I would recommend the tri just from the standpoint of general Windows usability. It'll make everything a bit faster. Not to mention the higher clockspeed and more efficient processing compared to the sempron will help with speed in everything as well.

Definitely go with 4GB RAM. Memory is cheap, so there's no reason to skimp on it.

It's already been stated multiple times in this thread that his current motherboard will support the PH2.
