Default Wich CPU should I get for my father?

Alright my father wants to upgrade his PC, because he wants to edit some foto's. He needs a new CPU (currently Sempron 2800+ @ 1.6GHz ) maybe some new ram as he runs vista 32-bit (currently 2x 512MB) and a new SATA harddisk (currently a maxtor 30GB IDE HDD) on an ASROCK AM2NF3-VSTA motherboard wich will support CPU's up to the Deneb cores with a bios update.

His budget is about $200. What should I get for him?

More info on the system is in my profile "Old AMD/ATI system"

Wouldn't a quad be better at editing?

I thought of getting this setup:

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9650
RAM: 2x 1GB Kingston Hyper-X
HDD: Maxtor STM3500320AS 500GB

Almost 200 euro's in my country

Other CPU options would be a Phenom II X3 710 (same price), Phenom X4 9950 BE (20 euro's more) or the Phenom II 940 (30 euro's more and I will have to cancel the RAM)

Go with the Phenom II X3. The original Phenom X4's were crap.

And definitely upgrade the ram. Maybe even consider going 4GB if you can squeeze it in the budget.

And DON'T get a Maxtor hard drive. They are one of the most unreliable manufacturers out there. Go Western Digital or Samsung for reliability.

Thanks for the info, but shouldn't 4 core's be better for editing or would a triple suffice?
And I will look for another brand thanks for noticing

The power in the cores of the Phenom II X3 kinda makes up for it, no need for Phenom I.

Potential customer: What is the meaning of life?
nVidia representative: PhysX, as seen in next-gen games like Batman:Arkham Asylum, PhysX makes your g200 based card BETTER than the 58XX series in all aspects. You'd be an idiot to buy ATI when you'd be forfeiting physX
