Thanks a lot for the help so far guys...

You recommended the ATI 4850 over the 9800gtx, if i could afford the 4870 how would it compare to the GTX 275?

Is it worth the extra $30 to get the nvidia card over the 4870?

Well the 4870 would beat the GTX 260 core 216, but compared to the GTX 275 I think the two would be about even.

EDIT: They do come close depending on what company you buy from.

mastertrix that was a fantastic post and a very helpful build thanks.

However i just found a rediculous processor/mobo deal check it out:
$200 for the x4 940 and the mobo is basically free. Of course, i'll have to settle for the ATI 4870 if I go with this build...

If it were you would you go with:
phenom II x3 720 and a gtx 275
or
phenom II x4 940 and an ATI 4870

Stay with the 4870. Its a better card. Your mobo is a chipset for ATI NOT NVIDEA. Your build is perfect. Do not stray off it! The 4870 is probably a bit better than GTX275 or about the same. Also if you listen to these guys, YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY OPPORTUNITY TO GO CROSSFIRE WITH THE BOARD YOU PICKED OUT. It is not an Nforce chipset. Your mobo supports crossfire only.

ok thanks man - i have no plans to ever do crossfire or SLI. I don't know about it being a better card, but if its really close to the gtx 275 i would like to save the extra $50.

Are you saying my mobo won't work with an nvidia gpu or it's just preferrable to use ati with it?

the 4870 is in no way a better card than a 275. thats a good deal on the 940 however. do you really need that much processing power, or would u rather have a better gpu.

if you render and encode a lot then go with the 940 deal, if not stick with the 720

The 4870 is not better than a GTX275. We are just trying to give him a choice.
